booking a private villa, is there anyway to do this safely?

Hi,
Some friends and I have found a private villa we would like to book in Ibiza, as it is private (although found through a website) it is not ATOL protected. I have asked to pay the deposit required to hold the villa on credit card but as it is not a company the owner does not have the facilities to do this but has asked for a balance transfer, Is there anything stopping the owner from keeping our deposit if something went wrong? it makes me uneasy to do this but this seems the norm in renting a private villa. is there any way to protect ourselves? I would appreciate any advice!
