Analysing my Gas & Electricity usage - last 14 months

This is since I moved in December 07.

date from - to - gas units - cost inc vat - elec units - cost inc vat
1/12/7 - 3/3/8 141 £107.28 373 £49.18
4/3/8 - 26/4/8 58 £49.68 187 £26.93
27/4/8 - 29/7/8 26 £23.21 361 £44.07
30/7/8 - 28/10/8 27 £26.52 406 £52.76
29/10/8 - 27/1/9 114 £135.40 522 £77.51
£342.09 £250.45

If I approximate this usage to a monthly basis it looks like this:
Month Gas cost Elec cost
Dec 07 £35.76 £16.39
Jan 08 £35.76 £16.39
Feb £35.76 £16.39
Mar £24.84 £13.47
Apr £24.84 £13.47
May £7.74 £14.69
Jun £7.74 £14.69
Jul £7.74 £14.69
Aug £8.84 £17.59
Sep £8.84 £17.59
Oct £8.84 £17.59
Nov £45.13 £25.84
Dec £45.13 £25.84
Jan 09 £45.13 £25.84

Average monthly cost:
Gas £24.44
Electricity £17.89

I'm currently on ebico tariff for both, and pay quarterly, they send me a bill, I send them meter readings, they update the bill then I pay.

I use southern electric/gas online system to check bills.. you can't yet do anything interesting like check your usage with graphs etc but it says those features are on the way.

It's noticable how gas usage decreases dramatically during the summer and also how this winter is colder than last winter!

So just wondered whether I can change anything to save some money? Thanks for reading :)

  • I just did a comparison on energy helpline it said my current spend was £420 a year on ebico but npower would save me about £68 a year. This means paying by direct debit and includes a standing charge. ebico doesnt have a standing charge and i can just pay each month by supplying meter readings.
Do you think its worth switching or staying on the simple ebico tariff? i checked the kwh cost and gas is similar but npower is 9.45p for electricity whereas ebico is 14.87p quite a big difference there.
  • can someone please help me. I have just done a meter reading of gas and electric and am concerned about my workings out. I have used 1867kwh electricity since beginning of November( I live in a big drafty house). And 367 units of gas. I am with Npower and SOL14 and they say that i pay 3.593p for gas and 9.45p for electricity. Now at my working out I get that at about £14.68 for the gasto date, is that cheap or wrong?

    Both - cheap and wrong.

Unless you mean you have used 367 kwh of gas.

If you mean 367 meter units, you will have to convert them to kwh. If your meter is metric (cubic metres), it's roughly 11 x 367. If your meter is imperial (cubic feet) , it's 31 x 367.
  • Sadly it is wrong mannew.

Gas is measured by volume and charged to you per kWh. 1 unit on the meter represents either 100 cubic feet or 1 cubic metre, depending on whether you have an imperial meter or a metic metre.

You need to find out what your meter is reading - have a look at the dials on the meter and you should find some information alongside that will tell you. For an approximate conversion multiply by 31 if you have an imperial meter or by 11 if you have a metric metre. This will give you the kWh from which you can calculate the cost of energy used.
  • Thanks magenasue it must be what you say otherwise I must have the cheapest gas bill for heating an old large drafty house that npower will ever get. lol
