Cardew, I get upset when folk that have gas preach the disadvantages of a system that is possibly less versatile than gas but far far better than oil, to people who have no gas.

Our house is about 900ft2 bungalow, Richard. The pump goes off at 11:30pm and comes back on again at 6:00am weekdays and 7:00am weekends. It gets down to about 15C when it's as cold as it is right now and maybe 16.5C when it's milder.
I'm not expecting electicity usage to go beyond 440kWh/week which is what it was two weeks ago when we had the last cold spell. We use 70-80kWh/week for uses other than heating. Hot water is included in my heating total of course.
It's -11C now outside and it's still 22C in here...
Quiet Life - soinds like it might be.
I take it your heating is on all day from when it comes on in a morning?
Ive just done a calculation I am charged 17.85p per KW unit of electric on my meter and so I calculated what 440kw's would be for me if it was on my meter!
I worked out £78.54...
During the night I left the system on last night for both bedrooms with a set point of 19C and it used £1.36 in the space of 7 hours which I thought was a lot.
My landlord rips us off for electric though! If you found my post helpful, please remember to press the THANKS button! --->0 -
If bushy's got a 14kW heatpump and it isn't heating his brand new house, he either has a really huge house or his pump isn't installed properly.0

Or as it seems to me the system isnt suitable for low outdoor temperatures or undersized for the size of property.
But 14kw on a modern new build house shouldnt need 14kws!If you found my post helpful, please remember to press the THANKS button! --->0 -
Our heating comes on at 6:00am and goes off at 11:30pm. Weekends 7:00am - 11:30pm. We've just changed for British Gas Click Energy 6 to EDF. EDF charges £105 Standing Charge PA and I think the cost per kWh is just under 9p including the VAT,0

My word we get ripped off then, I get 5.6kw units of electric for every £1 I put in and he says he isnt ripping us off!
If we had a proper bill we would benefit a bit from Tier 1 and then Tier 2 he just charges us a flat rate of 17.85p per unit.
How much KW's a day would you say your using on heating alone at the moment? If you found my post helpful, please remember to press the THANKS button! --->0 -

Its -8.1C here, my units output will be fading as its below 0C but at -8C it will be losing duty now but we are still toasty and 22/23C.
Bedrooms are maintainted at 18C all night long as I hate waking up cold.If you found my post helpful, please remember to press the THANKS button! --->0 -
I turn the room stat down to 18C when I go to bed. If it's mild out the pump doesn't come on much in the morning because the house doesn't lose much heat overnight - we have 15" loft insulation...0
