  • Seem to be spending my life at the moment trying to work out what heat source is going to be best for a barn conversion that I am about to embark on. What surprises me is that there is no definate answer.
Have moved away from GCH and OSH as the cost of installation plus running costs have put me off.
Thinking of woodburner in kitchen and living room.
To get away from the prob of having some low level heat when the burner is on I'm thinking of a heat pump or storage heater.
Lots of people seem to be raving on about the ASHP and not so much about the GSHP.
Am I right in thinking that the ASHP is cheaper to install and therefore better ?
Anyone been in a similar situation and have some actual feedback.

ASHP is cheaper to install however GSHP are more efficient, however ASHP is still the most popular.

Thanks rich. Could I ask you for the very basic of guesstimates on the costs of a ASHP for a 4 bedroomed cottage ? And also in respect to a GSHP (if i did all of the prep myself)

Very hard to tell as depends on many factors, are you going to use radiators or fan coil units (air con units) to deliver the heat.

What I have found is that it is very difficult to get running costs for GSHP installations.
The parents of an engineer I know, has a five bedroomed bungalow and for two years have been paying £550 / month electricity bill, I told him to switch the electric backup elements off, he said they were off. Over £6000 / year. My Annual bill for a four bed detached house using ASHP Ecodan was for £840 all electric. Remember, with GSHP when you have pulled all the heat from the ground, if it cannot recover quick enough, the pump and compressor will have to run harder to upgrade what little heat there is. I suggest you come and look at a system in place, get a feel for it, before making a decision.

4 bed cottage, if its well insulated, DG, the cost of an 8.5 kW c/w 210L DHW Cyl system would cost around £7K installed, you can install the G/F UFH and F/F radiators.

Thinking of underfloor. Want to get all of the insulation done first obviously. Its just the thought of digging up the floor to fit the UF as I dont want to lose any height. Thinking of fitting the UF mayself and digging the trench for the GSHP and anything else I can do to minimise the cost. Am I talking well over 5k ?

GSHP, to get 4.5 KW out of the ground using borehole would cost about £4-£5K so you would need Two so theres £8 -£10K before buying the kit. obviously it would be cheaper if you go for slinkies if you have land, two 50 Metre trenches 2M wide x 2M deep and the trenches need to be at least 5M apart. Digging at this time of year with the rain?
