I haven't been to Camber Sands for a few years (only a day visitor - never at Pontins!!) but it always seemed a really nice spot! Is it just Pontins which is 'tired' or the whole area? Isn't there a Haven there too?
To be honest Plastic it only comes alive in the summer,if you love the sandy beach(which has a lot of shingle now, due to longshore drift) kiss me quick hats and ice cream its still has something to offer.Like a lot of villages now it does suffer from petty crime...Doing Pontins up will help the area.
Its still good for metal detecting:D jewellery and money.(coke can ring pulls, tin foil etc)0 -
Another problem is the jobs will be seasonal, which is better than nothing ,but it isn't enough for people to live on.0

I like a sandy beach and ice cream but I'm not so sure about the kiss me quick hat!!0 -
The only jobs being created seem to be absolute bottom of the rung dead end jobs that offer little reward
Pontins and Butlins 'create' new jobs every year.
It's because the jobs are only temporary and some part time for their season.
They all get laid off in November, re-hired at Christmas, laid off in January and then re hired again in the Spring.
The Jobcentre in Minehead, does not handle 'normal' business in the first two weeks of January (i.e. JSA claimants are not required to sign-on) as they are so busy handling all the people laid off by Butlins. Then in March they have a huge 'job fair' to recruit new staff for the same place.'In nature, there are neither rewards nor punishments - there are Consequences.'0 -

Surprised me that they were expanding, but this seems to explain how they keep the costs down.0 -
Pontins was posh in the late 60s/70s. We used to drive to an area and look out for where a farmer had a caravan in the corner of his field.
I remember one year we couldn't find any signs hanging saying "caravan to let", and we pulled up at the gate of a Pontins.... oooh how I wanted us to go in there. I'd never been in a holiday camp (still haven't!). Sat there praying, then dad came out, got in the car and said "too much" and we had to keep driving around to find a farmer with a caravan in the corner of their field. They always had a chemical loo in a wooden shelter outside and gas mantels inside.

Sounds like 'Carry on Camping'!
I've been to a Butlin's once, it was the only place in the area that would take an all male stag party. The 'entertainment' consisted of a karaoke man who wouldn't let anyone else sing and kept bawling 'red red wine' to a crowd of bored looking pensioners. We struck up 'oh dear what a rotten song' every time and he eventually got the message and let us take over. I doubt we did much better but the pensioners gave us a round of applause!
I then got berated in the lavs by one of the bar staff who said we were making him stay up late to serve us...pure 'Fawlty Towers'! only without the class!'Never keep up with Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It's cheaper.' Quentin Crisp0 -
They covered this on the news last night briefly. Cameras at Pontins etc Ruth Madoc hi de hi etc. Holiday?? No, my idea of hell sorry, agadoo doo doo.I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left. :rolleyes:0

My only experience of holiday camps (so far) was a week in Butlins in 1977. I was 11 years old and it was bl00dy fantastic. It was at Ayr during the Glasgow fortnight. One of the best holidays we had as a family!
But then at 11, if there's swimming, fairground rides, amusement arcades, plenty of coke and crisps (sent out from the bar by the parents - kids not allowed in back then), you haven't got a lot to complain about surely?!
I imagine the accommodation is a lot better nowadays - it was definitely very Hi De Hi back in the 70s.
Hmmm, might investigate holidays camps this year. Do my bit for the British economy and all that ...0 -
People must really be struggling if they are expected (or are already) an increase in bookings. Those places are the pits. Well if you come from round here (the SE) in order of choice you have:
Potters
Warners
Butlins and
Pontins Ugh!0
