Hi :-)

I'm a total newbie with this stuff; can I ask about the basics of 1899 and if it's able to be used with virgin mobile pay-as-you-go?

Many thanks, Cat

Yes you can use 1899 through Virgin Payg via their 020 access number.
See for rates : http://www.1899.com/mobilerates.php but its not that cost effective on Virgin Payg because of the 3p connection, the higher rates you incur for using the the 020 access number, and the fact that you have to pay 15p/5p to call it.

What were you hoping to acheive? EG Cheaper x-net calls.Cheaper Intl calls i might be able to suggest something on this.

    Hi Pricefighter

Many thanks for confirming it is possible to use 1899 with Virgin, and for the link. I wasn't sure what 1899 was or about the rates, and understand now that it would cost me more if I used it ... I don't have any international calls to make at this time. It's great to know that if I did have, money could be saved. Thank you for offering to suggest something. If and when any international calls are needed, I'll definitely post again. I have to own up and say I don't know what a EG x-net call is! can I ask what it is?

    Thanks, Cat
  • Hey I'm interested in saving on international calls. Also You can still save using 1899 as i'm with 02 and they charge 40p to other mobiles yet with 1899 it'll only be about 3p + 5p (o2) + connect charge 3p = 11p not as bad?
    Thanks

For Example cross network mobile calls is what i meant. Rather then pay 35p a minute you can dial 0871 999 575 and get these calls for 15p.

Also you can dial numerous intl destinations via 0871 317 5678 for just 15p.

The OP was talking about Virgin Payg and my comments were based on him using that service in conjunction with 1899.

I presume you mean calling a cross network mobile via the the 1899 020 access number. This would cost you 25/5p a minute from 02 and 3p connection and 10p a minute from 1899 peak/evenings 2p weekends. Not so good .
However O2 allow you to call 0844 numbers for 10p evenings, 5p offpeak so you can dial the https://www.discountdial.co.uk 0844 mobile access number at these rates .Bit better ! Also you can make cheaper intl calls during these periods using 0844 access numbers.

Better still!! If you got yourself a FREE O2 Payg sim and topped up by £10 you could have 100 free x-net minutes you can use to call mobiles and 07744/0844 numbers, and you get to keep the £10 to use as well.

A neat trick with Nokia phones: You can store a number in the phone book with a Pause between the 0208/whatever access number and your real destination number. A single button press can then dial it, and the destination number is only dialled (automatically) once the service provider is properly waiting for it. I think it's '*' 3 times quickly to store a Pause, a little p then shows. Using 0208... access with Virgin is still seriously economical for callls abroad and the 0208... numbers from 18866 and the like don't keep changing.

To add to what pricefighter said about O2, you could also sign up for their international option, which gives calls to Ireland at 5p/min, rest of Europe 7p/min. So the £10 top-up could get nearly 300 minutes, with the current Joining Treats offer added too, or there are off-peak bundles ...
