Here are the facts as taken from the OP's posts.
post 1 - son is named driver on the policy. Also referred to as "his" car and not "their" car

Post 4 - Dad only used it on saturday morns for shopping.

Post 27 - Dad is now the main driver and son only uses it 3 times per week to visit girlfriend

first car is written off in poor weather at only 20mph
second car is suspected to be written off at only 15mph again in bad weather.

From the above here's my tuppence.
This is fronting if dad is main driver as claimed in post 27. Or it's not as claimed in post 1. Both posts cannot be correct.
It seems that at 17 your son hasn't quite mastered the art of driving to suit the conditions and as a result has been going too fast (but not necessarily breaking the limit) in both instances. Presumably the insurance agreed he was at fault since the insurance has been hiked.

For any advice gained here then it's helpful if all the facts are presented in a clear and honest manner. In post 1 your son was a named driver and that it was his car. If it's his car and he's not the policy holder then it's fronting.
In post 4 you confirmed that the dad only used it for weekend shopping reinforcing the "son is the main driver" school of thought.
But in post 27 you claim dad is the main user and the son only uses for about 3 nights a week when he's not too tired.

    Something not quite right here.

  • I had an accident on Monday - a young driver hit my car, insurance details came through today and it turns out that her mother is the named driver on the policy. But after the accident she referred a number of times to "my car", said that it had ben given to her and that she, not her mother, was looking for a new one. (She and her brother who was her passenger have apparently got whiplash.... ;_) So this thread has been informative for me!
  • some people will say I've been morally incorrect.

I am saying nothing on that topic

it is well known that 17 year old drivers are a very high risk.

The accident in the snow was just an accident in the snow.
