I think they would need a signature to do it. That said there is no reason not to just write a letter asking them to close the account and enclosing all unused cheques and cards (cut them up first though)0

or could i write if they wont do it over the phone with a signed letter asking for it to be closed?0

They will definitely not do it over the phone. You EITHER need to go into the branch with ID, or write a letter to them, make sure you sign it and enclose your cut up debit card and cheque book if you have one.or could i write if they wont do it over the phone with a signed letter asking for it to be closed?Kavanne
Nuns! Nuns! Reverse!

I've recently closed mine after becoming totally peed off with the "hard sell" over the counter.
I wrote a letter to the branch requesting closure, the reply asked for me to send in any chequebooks, cards etc. relating to the account before the closure could be finalised. I suspect that was the manager being a trifle pedantic because it's usually acceptable to confirm those items have been destroyed. They didn't ask for the card reader but I sent it anyway.0 -
I recently closed two accounts with Natwest (hard sell definately 1 of the reasons). I just sent a letter for each account, signed by both account holders, detailing where I wanted any balances to be transfered to. Never sent cards, cheque books, etc. Received statements in post showing accounts as closed with £0 balances.0

how long did it take before the account was closed?0

In my case I received a confirmation letter by return post. Any Direct Debits on the account had been cancelled/transferred already and I made sure there were no outstanding transactions.how long did it take before the account was closed?
As I previously stated they did require cards, chequebook etc. to "finalise" closure. So for me about a working week.
At present battling with them over £1.25 outstanding balance in a savings account which they can't locate!(the account that is) Fortunately I received a final statement yesterday, so they're on to a loser over that.0 -
I had a similar experience with HSBC ended up giving in and loosing $2
I did suggest on the 'phone yesterday that if the £1.25 or account couldn't be located then they donate the money to their directors' hardship fund. That suggestion went down like a sack of poo.
I've also£0.1p in another savings account which 'I wasn't aware of, they can have that!:p0 -

I had a similar issue when I shut my savings and current account - didn't bother chasing as for 60p tho - must really mount up for the bank!0
