Huge thanks to you all:T I feel so much more confident after reading your replies and some excellent stuff regarding the intro's Thanks.
YorkiePud I think that a part of me was feeling a bit guilty about looking for another dog so soon after losing our old boy but as you quite rightly said why not give another one the chance of a loving home.
UKTigerlily so glad you finally managed to rehome:j Will keep you posted on our progress and hopefully wont be to long before im posting a pic or 3 of the new arrival:rotfl:
Thanks again x0 -
Kizzyw - where in the country are you - just wondering whether we can recomend any good rescues to you, where the dogs are likely to be well assessed?0
-
Thanks appreciate that.Im in Worksop,Notts
The rescues that i know of or visited near me so far are Mayflower,(going on Sat)Thornberry,(going Sun)Babworth, and rspca Bawtry.
Had a lovely chat with a lady at Mayflower and regulars at Thornberry as its where we got are last dog from xx0 -
I think 4 hours max would probably be ok with a rescue. But you would need, as you appreciate, to find the right dog. You dont want one who will howl for those four hours.
A decent rescue will have assessed the dog and should be able to find the right one for you. If its a dog which has been rehomed due to family circs you may find one already used to cats.
As fc says, where are you in the country?0 -

Hey KizzyW - my dog came from Mayflower!! - they are super and have a behaviouralist too in case of any problems (or they did when I got Badger 18 months ago) Jennie is lovely (small lady, red hair!), and they also do bits throughout the year like sponsored walks and dog shows which are fun! I would recommend them 110%! They know the dogs very well, homecheck carefully, the kennels are lovely and even have underfloor heating. Every time I have been the dogs have had warm beds, toys etc, and there are treats you can give to the dogs as you look around!
Babbington operates like the pound for parts of Nottinghamshire and are much less pro-active - dingy kennels, unspeyed dogs, patchy homechecks etc AFAIK. Their rehoming fee is higher than mayflower (or was last year), but the dogs are only chipped and vacc'd routinely.
RSPCA Bawtry - I am sure its fine, but the kennels are not great and a lot of the dogs seemed stressed, but that may have been just the day I visited - but the policies etc should be fine.
AFAIK Jerry Green (Jay Gee) are quite good. I havent used them, but they did help me once when I found a poorly old lurcher and no-one else would!
The ones more at the nottingham end (PAWS, East Mids etc) are out of my area so I dont really know them - there is also BARK at retford (also called Babworth - I think they are ok, but no personal experience really other than that I helped transport a dog for the once!).
There is also rain rescue which is an umbrella organisation of small local rescues - may be worth a look http://www.rainrescue.co.uk/
There is also Carlton forest (worksop) which is the pound for north notts, but again, I think much less is known about the dogs than at places like mayflower.
ETA - this is just my opinion, I do not want anyone to sue me!! lol0 -
Interestingly I was surprised to find that a lot of the rescue centres dont do actual home checks.......and that they are happy with a certificate from the vets.
Fair enough, you may say but how does a vet actually know if a home is a decent one?0 -

The best ones generally do unless there are exceptional circumstances - often, if they don't it is because they are struggling for funds or volunteers to do so. If anyone is interested in helping rescues to overcome this by becoming a volunteer homechecker, rescuehelperunite is a great website!
Little Tinker, perhaps you could help?0 -
Perhaps I already do?foreign_correspondent wrote: »The best ones generally do unless there are exceptional circumstances - often, if they don't it is because they are struggling for funds or volunteers to do so. Its interesting you say the 'best ones' though.0 -
Excellent, where do you help and in what capacity? Its interesting you say the 'best ones' though.
why? (dont want to derail this thread though!!)
OP, good luck, do let us know how you get on!! When I got Badger from Mayflower, they asked me how long she would be left, and I said the longest would probably be about 6 hours (I work from home quite a lot), and they asked if I could get someone to pop in midday if it was that long - I can as my mum lives quite locally and has a dog, and OH's dad is a taxi driver, so is often passing anyway, so it was fine. Generally, If I think I will be out for any longer than that I take her over to my dads who enjoys having her for a day!0
