Electric heaters - smell!

Hi all,
I have recently purchased a property which is part GCH and additional electric wall mounted heaters. When you turn on the electric heaters, they get warm/hot, but a strange smell is giving off by both; almost like burning.
Is this normal? Also the last owners were not the cleanest of people and i can see alot of dust inside one of the heaters (the other is a sealed radiator type heater). Could this be the cause?
Any ideas??

If the electric fan heater at my work is anything to go by (switched on for the first time in months recently), it's probably dust burning off.
We have some expert contributors to this board who will hopefully offer their opinion.10 Dec 2007 - Led Zeppelin - I was there. :j :cool2: I wear my 50 (gold/red/white) blood donations pin badge with pride. Give blood, save a life. 0 -
Have to agree with Nile. It will be the dust burning off. When we bought our House in September it had been empty for 2 years and was very dirty and dusty and our elctric haters and storage heaters smelt funny for awhile till the dust had burnt off.0

Dust burning off IMHO... will go after a while but if you are unsure
just get them chu(e)cked out....0 -
Chuck them out?? They are fitted to the walls and into a mains socket!! + how much would they cost to replace?!
Is there any tips on cleaning? (I'm planning on getting a hoover nozzle into it as far as i can!)0 -
I think Mr Skint's reply was a mistype and he ment checked out.
Our Gas fire stinks everytime we use it becasue it is used so infrequently, you could try the hoover, or a can of air to blow the dist away but the smell should go after a bit.0 -

Phew!! Not very in the spirit of MSE, just because it smells a little to chuck it out!! lol
Will try the hoover trick and air blast, see what that does.

If the heaters have a "fishy" type smell (you will know if they have ) then they need replacing as the wiring has failed if not is must be dust0

It really smells like burning and i was getting worried, but if it is dust, then i'm happy; an easy problem to solve (i hope!)0
