Can two people refer each other to 3?

I'm at the end of a 3 contract. I would stay, but the "retention" deals on offer are worse than what's available to new customers via the web. Can anyone tell me (from experience, preferably) ... if I refer a friend (RAF) and stay with 3 long enough to collect my £30 RAF credit, then leave for a month (or more?), can my friend then refer me as a new customer so we both collect another £30 RAF credit on the new contract? Or will 3 recognise me as an existing customer and refuse the RAF credit?
I would need to be confident that it would work, because only the cash saving will keep me with 3.
I do know how difficult it is to get any kind of problem sorted through the call centre.

There are some reports that you can claim Quidco cashback and also RAF (technique mentioned on HotUKDeals.co.uk). For RAF, you cannot refer yourself (due to a change last year) but should be no problem being referred by someone else - after all, from what you are saying, you are not a current customer at the time you are referred (you don't have a contract).

Thanks for those comments. I guess the key question is .. what is the minimum length of time for which I have to be an ex-customer before I can be referred and benefit from the RAF credit? Does anyone have experience of this?
I tried the Quidco/RAF combination when I first signed up with 3: I got the Quidco, but not the RAF.0
