Wow that is good news, its awful to see them go, and would be good to have them back ... however I think personally they made the wrong decision being online ... I think stores would be so much better but thats just my 2p worth ;)

Totally agree there, but at least some form of Woolies is better than none. Hopefully their party stuff will still be decent prices!

Good to see we haven't totally lost a piece of good old british history though

Heard a bit of this on the radio at lunchtime. Sad this couldn't have happened sooner. I've heard that our woolworths store is to become a frozen food store........

This is going to be an online store.
The reason Woolies went to the wall in the first place is because they didn`t sell anything that you couldn`t buy cheaper elsewhere.

Not quite sure how you work that out alared, Wollies always had cheap items in there, most of their items were reasonably priced and also some were cheaper, if you say things like they went to the wall in the first place cause they didn't sell anything that you couldn't get cheaper elsewhere then bang goes tesco's and asda down the pan as they are more extortionately priced than ever before so they much be going to the wall!

  • I hope they have school uniform - it's the only place I've found where the polo shirts don't go all funny after 2 washes!

And their trousers fit DD - she's skinny with very long legs - I've not had much luck with Asda ones they seem to be a magnet for our cat's hairs :o
Officially a non-smoker but still rounder than recommended :p

    It aint all that great.

Shop Direct will make the site like all other of there sites, Like littlewoods and kays. Offer Credit and Hike the prices up REAL high.

They will sell the same stock as littlewoods and simply put the woolworths logo on things.

Go ahead and look at all of shop directs sites! they look the same and sell the same :rotfl:

If i was in there shoes and had that amount of money i would of bought the stores too. Seeing as they can spend so much on just the name i do not know why they couldnt buy the whole thing!

    Well forget it, it happens.

But that`s my point, whatever Woolies sold you could get cheaper in Asda or Tesco while you did your weekly shop.

So, this is what I came to say. Shop Direct have bought the NAME, not the brand as such. Woothworths, as it was, has gone forever I am afraid. They will sell the same stuff as they do on the other Shop Direct websites - school uniform included. They will run Woolworths the same way as they run Additions Direct website where you pay when you buy rather than on credit. Shop Direct own almost all of the Home Catalogue sites now, Empire, Kays, Marshall Ward, Littlewoods, Littlewoods Direct, etc... there are 19 sites that they own apparently - and this is why they all look the same.

I used to love Woolies for buying toys around August for the kids for Xmas so I'll probably go to The Entertainer now, shopping online has always been better for me so I loved Woolies but I do not think I'd use it if it was online. However, they do have other offers if you sign up to the site, I got some stuff for next Xmas, a hairdryer and some school clothes from Marshall Ward that was in the sale, around £140 worth of bits, for £38 including delivery.

It is the same with anything, you can get some great bargains if you shop around but please don't expect Woolies to be the same as it ever was. I reckon they paid around £1 for the name of that store - it is pretty much useless now.

Rather interestingly though, Shop Direct has also cut over 1000 jobs recently http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7856119.stm so they have probably bought the name in hope that the customers do not mind the difference. I will though, I'll buy if it is cheap enough.
