not sure i understand you... i thought it was common practice to get as much as possible in exchange for stuff... and if you have a commodity thats viewed as essential you can basically name your price.... if i were a greedy capitalist i'd currently be putting up the prices of diesel, petrol, fuel oil, etc, especially if i knew i hadn't got a lot left... i'd squeeze as hard as i could...

It's called supply and demand. You can only sell it for what folk are willing to pay. And with the amount of capital involved you have to sell it if you have put the infrastructure in place to produce it.

Here is a an article worth reading:-

One final point you are making an assumption that oil is about to run out, which is incorrect.
  • your point being?? it seems people in this country would be willing to pay over a pound a litre for diesel, or even petrol... possibly much more.. lets be honest, the attitude of most is "yes its expensive, but we've got to have it, so we'll pay up and moan..." its like all these people who say "if the price of cigarettes/beer goes up in the budget I'll stop buying it..." then when it goes up, they just fork out the new price.... and oil, being a non renewable resource, will run out.... its just a question of when.... and how do we know the big oil companies are telling the truth about how much is left.... lets be honest, they're not best known for their fair, ethical attitude to life.....

So you reckon you can only sell it for what people are willing to pay?RUBBISH we have to pay these inflated prices as the goverment and oil companies have got us over a barrell
so to speak,if you want to continue running youre vehicle,But hey the good old goverment are planning a nice 2p a litre tax rise on 1st april(according to last weeks daily express)and no doubt the kind generous oil companies will award us more increases.HAPPY DAYS IN RIP OFF BRITAIN!!!!!

exactly my point.. if petrol was at 5 quid a litre, people would still buy it and moan.... most people's attitude being.. "well, I've got to have it..." because what is the alternative? public transport costs are intimately related to fuel prices.... and who wants to get their entire family biking to the seaside for a holiday... supply and demand etc only works if there are viable alternatives... when a company or group of companies holds an effective monopoly on a product seen as essential for which there is no viable alternative, they can charge what they like.....
