Any unemployed Grads here?

So I graduated in Summer 08 and carrie don working in the retail store that i had worked in during my studies. I quit in the New year and now find myself in a terrible situation where I can't find a job at all!

Even retali is tough, there are barely any jobs going, so tough!

My degree is pretty useless

actually i found that while working there i didn't have the time and energy to look for a job. I grossly underestimated the economic situation, and my lack of experience.

I also quit because i was unhappy with the management there, plus the contract I had there was not full time
  • Me! I'm in a great boat- loads of low skilled low pay jobs on cv. All working with people and kids, good grades and a decent degree. Not experienced enough for a decent job, too overqualified for a crap one! My sympathy...

The only bit of parental advice I ever took any notice of was "Don't leave on job without another one to go to". They were absolutely right, it's much easier to get a job when you already have one.

To anyone in this situation, make sure you're doing something constructive with your period of unemployment (voluntary work/training etc) so that you can make something positive of this on your CV.

If you have office / secretarial skills I would recommend that you join an agency for temp work. There will be competition, and yo may consider it menial but if you can access a pc for personal use during your lunch break you can at least earn and keep an eye on the jobs market at the same time.

    Only retail experience...

so today i braved the snow ans went into town to apply to job agencies... BIG MISTAKE.

I went to four agencies and two of them were not acepting any registration at all, and the other two would not even bother with me because i didnt have 6 months office experience!

The only place with jobs is at the volunteer place! Will volunteer a day a week or something, travel expense is paid but at least I get eexperience...

Cabot circus complex... has about 8 jobs going in the whole complex.. its a joke really, no jobs anywhereeeeee

My degree is literally useless, no-one cares about my degree, only what experience I have. This is painful

What is your degree in? Is there any chance you could offer yourself through Tutoring organisations as a one-to-one tutor in that subject ... or did you choose something obscenely obscure?

Have you considered leaving your degree off applications for some of the more crap jobs? It would probably be galling, I admit, after having worked for the degree, but if you're seriously applying for those kind of jobs anyway, it may give you a better shot at getting something.
    best of luck! :)

the problem is that how do you explain what you have been doing for the last 3+ years
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

You worked part time during your studies - put them down as your employer there's no need to put if you were full or part time
  • Hi OP, you've really just got to get your head down and keep at it. Apply for anything and everything. You should treat applying for a job as a job in itself i.e. do it from 9-5. I graduated Summer 06 and got a job within 2 weeks but I know the situation is so different now: my boyfriend graduated at the same time as you and he's only just secured himself a full time job a week ago, after applying for the past 6 months.

I would second the advice of others to get yourself some volunteering experience asap (either in the evenings or at the weekends) as it will look better on your CV.
