  • o2 have always had problems billing for gprs, hence why it was free for ages. They probably still can't bill it properly hence you get it for free

I was offered all inclusive free as part of a new contract for 2 months ( on 3G)
( afdter some agruments about it being free, then not !)
Used in a PDA and also in a old ( semi unlocked) nokia 7600 via usb to laptop

however I found it hard to get a 3g o2 singal , and on gprs it was slow, so new used it that much

think most voice contracts have 5mb for first month then 1mb pm thereafter

To be honest I would be worried if started using , as amount of data soon adds up , and perhaps they may back date costs - perhaps better trying with a payg card ??

I can't find the data use on the unbilled usage - only the allowance on the last (=first) bill - 1 day 165k, 5120k next month (now).

On Sunday I managed to install Bluetooth, Nokia PC Suite, and use old 7600 as modem; it took a while to figure out (the Belkin instructions for the dongle could be a lot better) and I called O2 for some details. I'm not in 3g area; gprs connects at 115 kb/s but seems slower so probably either contended or slowed down by signal strength; I was told that it will connect at 3g when in range (which isn't what the first info was).

Had my o2 xda exec for a month now, and I'm pretty sure I used up the 5MB free allowance, but was not charged and the online usage monitor also shows I have not used any data allowance up.

Just have to be careful in case they turn the switch on at any time I suppose!

It would be useful if anyone in the know could respond as I would hate for it to be backdated given pda seems to eat KB like it is going out of fashion!

Perhaps it is a cunning ploy to get you used to it then switch on billing without you noticing ...

Same here - no charges incurred on my O2 paper bills for last month (despite using about 6Mb (both 2.5 & 3g) GPRS.

Interestingly, I accidentally clicked on my Orange GPRS DUN shortcut with my O2 3G SIM in the handset and it connected OK (except the connection speed was reduced to about 12kb/s on download). The modem string was still set for O2 (+CGDCONT=1,"IP","mobile.o2.co.uk") but the DUN password and user name settings were "a" (for Orange). Once I used the correct O2 GPRS DUN shortcut (mobileweb/password) the speed then increased to the usual 48kb/s.

Strange that it connected at all with the wrong username and password?

I had a new O2 contract connected in December and also haven't seen any GPRS usage show up on my bill.

I got a text from them this week saying 'hope you enjoyed the free mobile internet promo. Charging beings from 31 March'

That maybe explains why there is no charge so far.

  • Is anybody getting charged? If they "flick the switch", how far can they backdate billing?
