Thanks for info, handy to know. So I assume they aren't too bothered about past credit history then when you open a Barclays Cash Account? Also, do you get visa debit card or electron cards?

It's a VISA debit card. Barclays don't offer Electron cards anymore.

I have 2 cashcard accounts in my name and a joint one with Hubby. However when we went into branch last Saturday to open the joint account and a single one for Hubby although the joint application was ok when Hubby was declined for a current account (which we knew he would be) there was no option on the screen for the personal banker to open a cashcard account.

She said that this was because they're not supposed to open cashcard accounts in branch and that you are supposed to send off a postal application but I opened both my single accounts and the joint account in branch.

Hubby has sent off postally for his account and is now waiting to hear.

Also you can't open a cashcard account online. If you go to the website it tells you to go into your local branch where apparently they are supposed to just give you a postal application pack.

Your details are already captured in the system, so that is why the cash card account is opened in branch.

If you went for the decision of the cash card account instead, you could still apply in branch though. Just insist that you want to apply in branch, instead of post.
  • I was switched to a Barclays cashcard account when the Woolwich was taken over. I've had problems paying money into my Barclays ISA from a non Barclays account so I thought it would be useful to have this account, if I wanted to transfer money into my Barclays Isa. When I asked for some information from Barclays, the response I got when I mentioned the cashcard was a little frosty. Do I get the impression that simply by having these accounts, you are not regarded as a valuable customer? It's not my main account so I'm not bothered but I still am not sure if I can use it to transfer money into an ISA.

No matter what type of bank account you hold, you will be treaetd equally and fairly. If you are not happy about the way you are treated, I guess you could complain.

No way is this true! You're telling me that a HSBC Premier customer is treated the same as a HSBC Basic Account customer? Never in a million years would they be treated 'equally & fairly' lol

Likewise, i'm not treated the same as Christiano Ronaldo or Kaka but I don't feel complaining will quite achieve anything!

    Nice try though :j

On a similar track to this, I was in Hbos a few months a go and remember a bloke kicking off because they told him he couldn't use his card or whatever at the counter (must have been easycash or something) - you know that says it all, why is it that Hbos ban their basic account customers from using the counter? You know why, they think we are all scroats and a waste of their time!

That's my rant over with LOL

What I mean is customers are treated equally between normal current account customers and basic bank account customers. Obviously, premiere customer (and those kinds) is a special case, due to having their own bank manager and all that.

On their brochure, terms and conditions, and website, HBOS Easycash customer can't use branch service. He should have read about it before applying for it, so he won't kick off, lol. They could only use it when they need to withdraw amounts over £300 only.

Hiya Milfordmadness! I agree with you on this one lol!
I have a Halifax easycash account, and we have to use the phone if we have an enquiry, pay money in at the machine and generally keep away from the proper customers lol! I feel like a leper!
    £100 - £10,000
  • Why are banks stuck in the dark ages when it comes to opening a basic bank account?

Come on, you can open a current account, credit card etc online but when it comes to a basic account you have to go to a branch - but then they still don't allow you to open one there and then. You have to 'pickup' a postal pack!

I would change to a different provider if you want branch service with your basic bank account. ;)

If you are alright without branch service, I guess you could stick with your Easycash account.

I agree with you on this. However, most banks let you open a basic bank account in branch without any postal pack. An example is RBS/Natwest, LTSB, and Barclays - not sure about the others. Barclays basic bank account could be opened in branch or post.

    LOL, I knew what you mean but they aren't, like I said do you think i'd be treated the same (assuming I has a basic account with only dole money going into it) as say barclaysManager, assuming he had a current account and nothing fancy? It just wouldn't happen;

    1. I'm a dole-lite whereas other guy is a bank manager
    2. I bring in peanuts whereas other guy brings in 1000's per month
    3. I wouldn't ever get charged whereas other guy would probably have loan/mortgage/o-draft etc etc

See where i'm coming from? Visualise - I walk into the bank in my chavvy tracksuit (shell-suit even lol) with gold dripping from me, stinking of smoke generally being loud and abusive. Mr Bank Manager walks in wearing his nice expensive suit, smelling of aftershave and clean shaven/presentable - do you think the CSO's will run to serve me or him?

Enough, enough already!!!!!! I can't visualise any longer - CHAVS, I HATE EM!!!! LOL :spam:

Yea but why can't they? Forget the terms, it's as though they are being alienated for having basic facilities, because the bank makes no money out of them they seem to think they can save money by not serving them! Its ridiculous.....

It's just not fair - kind of like the old racist days, i.e. blacks/hispanics through this door / whites through this door......

Assume a bank manager recently went bust or something for whatever personal reason, he isn't exactly what you'd call a scroat so why should he then have to lose his facilities all because something went wrong in his life? What i'm trying to say is that not everyone who has a basic account is a scroat, granted, some are and some are dodgy/timewasters/scum/whatever - but I think they should chill out and treat everyone the same, apart from the personalised credit based scores obviously.

I needn't go on but you must see where i'm coming from?
