In your normal branch they will usually take name variations

But in some other or at a new bank they may query things

Actually happened to me with Halifax once but she still took the cheque

Did you provide the account Debit Card at the time? As Halifax swipe that to open your account for depositing the cheques.
and not Carol as it said on my bank card
.......... sounds as though you did (but do check the account number on the receipt matches .. not unknown the 'swipe' fails and they key it)? So, as post #4, the cheques should have registered on your account immediately (and the receipt will give you the date they become 'drawable' funds.)

If you can't get into the Branch .... phone and get transferred through to them. If the account number on the receipt is yours ..... no logical reason for the visibility delay.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

    Agreed.

Assuming that the roll number on the receipt matches the one on the back of your card, then, ...

It's best that you speak to the branch that did it themselves, as customer services (the 0845 number) don't have access to the full journal roll for the cashier.

Try to phone the branch. The direct dial phone number is here http://www.multimap.com/clients/places.cgi?client=halifax. If the phone rings five times and no one answers hang up and try again later, as after five rings it is transferred to the call centre. If they say you need to ring customer relations, say that you've tried that and they didn't do anything.

They should be able to look at transactions on your account that took place at that branch on that day. Their list will include ALL transactions, including those that were subsequently reversed. They should also be able to explain why it was reversed.

If the branch isn't answering their phone, try the call centre again, or going to a different branch, and ask them to check your account for any activity on the date you paid the cheque in. Their system should show any 'corrections' that were made that do not show up on your statement.

or on internet banking as "Cheque - available day/month".

V mild correction - from a customer perspective.

Whilst the availability of the cheque(s) is recorded, in Branch, on the receipt .... and the cheque values (separate or combined - depending how processed) are immediately shown in online view ....... it's always puzzled me that the availability date online does not actually show until after the following Batch.

(In just the same way that most BACS credits pick up the full designation details the following day)

Thanks to everyone for your replies. The card number on the receipt matches the number on my card. I will do as you say and contact the branch where it was paid in. Many thanks rb10 for providing the link.

I will let you know how I get one. Thanks again. :)

    Hi everyone,

I feel totally embarrassed! I just phoned the branch I paid the cheques into and......it turns out I paid them into my credit card account instead of my current account. I handed the wrong card over. Although I did say to the cashier that I wanted to pay them into my current account so I wonder why she didn't recognise that the card number started with the set of numbers used for their credit cards and not their current accounts as the person on the phone did? I was given a number where I was able to transfer the payment back to my current account.

Many thanks for your replies. :)

You thought she was sullen ..... she obviously thought you didn't know what you were talking about! :D

The cards do look alike ...... so keep them totally separate.

You can choose your colour with the credit cards. So if you get them muddled up (easy to do), why not get the bright pink one instead? :D
