Any tips on Singapore etc, please?

  • I would also like to recommend a visit to the Raffles - if you cannot make it for High Tea, you should go to the Long Bar, and have a Singapore Sling - which is not the best I have had, but the atmosphere is great, filled with suits, locals and tourists.

    A few tips...
The MRT is a convenient way to travel, and the rest of the transport network is quite good too. Do not try to get anywhere on Orchard Rd. in a taxi on a Friday Night. The places around Clarke Quay have a buzzy feel, with emphasis on bars and restaurants. There is also the legendary Zouk. However, if you are looking to just eat out, then there are lots of restaurants on Boat Quay, with alfresco dining and views of the Singapore river. There are plenty of photo opportunities around this part of town.

Although there are bargains to be had, however, Singapore generally does not feel like a place where you can haggle. But, If you are going to Boat Quay - walk towards the end where most of the restaurants are, you will be approached by various 'reps'/doormen etc. to spend your hard-earned cash in their establishment. You can always work out the popular places, and once you have settled on your choice, you can ask for a discount of anything upto 20% or more, from the person representing your chosen restaurant. This also applies to smaller club/bars around Clarke Quay - where they might waive the entry fees, or include a couple of drinks in the price.

I would echo the sentiment that 2-3 days is more than enough in Singapore, after that you become part of the experiment. Also posted recently: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=143494

We did a stopover in Singapore enroute to OZ in October 2004, we went on a trip around the city and saw all the sights in the few hours we were there. There is a beach area but it didn't seem very busy, I liked the airport best;)

We had 2 weeks in Malaysia in November 2004 first week in Penang and the second in KL, funny, because I don't do sitting in the sun but I really enjoyed Penang but found KL boring after a couple of days.

We went to Batu Ferengi and we had a lovely hotel with a guy who did Thai massage by the pool, I was really relaxed on that holiday:D . There were loads of places to eat and lots going on if you wanted it.

Both Malaysia and Singapore are about the same temp 30 degrees(ish) most of the time:cool:
