Are you applying for the DLA 404 exemption certificate?
The DLA can take around 4 weeks to issue them, ring them and see how long they advise it will be (tel no is 08457 123 456) - it's absolutely nothing to do with the DVLA.
Legally you must now pay for the road tax to drive/keep the vehicle on the road. You won't be able to do this now til tomorrow at a Post Office (which will be the quickest option, as if you did it online or by phone you'd still have to wait for the disc to come through post) but at least if you pay for it then you are legal to drive.
Your other option is to keep vehicle off road til the DLA 404 comes through.
If you buy the disc then when your DLA 404 comes through you can get the free disc at Post Office and apply for refund on remaining period left on paid for disc using form V14, hopefully you will only lose out on a month's tax then. If you can afford it then buy a 12month disc as you pay extra 10% admin cost on a 6 month disc which is not refundable.

The only exemption is when an application has already been made and paid for before the end of the month either online or via phone since the tax has then been 'issued'.
In that circumstance you are allowed to drive for up to 5 days after the end of the month without displaying a valid tax disc."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Sorry my mistake, 14 days
What About The 14 Days Grace?
If your vehicle licence has expired there is an understanding that you may continue to use the vehicle for up to 14 days. However you must apply for a new licence within the 14 day period and licence it from the expiry date of the previous licence. If proof that a complete application has been received at DVLNI, before taking a vehicle on the road, you will not be penalised for driving without a current Vehicle Licence or for failing to display one.
The 14 days period of grace is a concession. In law a current licence must be displayed at all times when the vehicle is on the road.0 -
I find it a lot easier and more reliable to renew the Road Fund Licence online.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0

That only applies in Northern Ireland! The clue is the term DVLNI. Driving & Vehicle Licensing Northern Ireland. So unless the OP is in NI then it does not apply.
In the mainland (GB) you cannot drive/keep a vehicle on the public highway without it displaying a valid tax disc unless:
1. You have applied in advance of the expiry date of the last disc by phone/online/trackable post method. Then you get 5 working days to drive the vehicle whilst you wait for the disc to come through post.
2. You are driving to a pre-booked MOT test (and are insured)
3. You are driving to a pre-booked VIC test (and are insured)
In GB there is a 14 day concession to PURCHASE the tax disc after the expiry date but during this time the vehicle must be kept off road:
If you intend to renew your vehicle tax you should do so before your current tax disc expires. However, this is not always possible if you’re waiting for insurance or are getting an MOT for your vehicle etc.
You’ll be committing an offence if you use or keep your vehicle on the public road without a current tax disc. If you cannot obtain a tax disc, you must remove your vehicle off the road.
While your vehicle is off the road, you have 14 days in which to obtain a tax disc or make a SORN.
