im going to by some elastic and sew onto each corner so each edge will stay over the edges of the matress so it doesnt come out of place hope it works, im also doing this for my 4 year olds bed as this year im determind to not have the heating on all night in winter but then again if its -10 like last time its better to leave on low to stop pipes freezing so i think il set thermostat at 14c.

You could try putting all his technology on one adaptor, most of them are very low wattage so this shouldn't overload it, this could then be used with a plug in timer to turn the whole lot of at a later hour once he has gone to sleep/

I used a night light for years when mine were young, just plugs into a light socket on the landing, just enough light to keep the bogey men away LOL, but very low wattage and comes on automatically at dusk and turns off at dawn. One with a white light as the coloured ones are useless.

Wilkies have all of these items and I would think the whole lot would cost less than £15 , how long it would take you to recover that cost would need to be worked out though.

Just got an email from Scottish Power. My charges are going up for electric 5p a kwh and nearly 2 for gas. I can't afford my gas bill as it is and I already run as little as possible. I have 2 kiddies to feed and bathe and we never have the heating on. Thank god for this thread. I need a notepad and pen to take tips. Will do that tonight.
    Thanks guys

Thank you all for the welcome "home". I'd say to anyone who hasn't already got an energy monitor from their supplier, "Go get one as it makes a huge difference when one can see the bills rising in front of you " It's certainly made a difference to us over the years. Your energy supplier should hand one over FOR FREE. If they don't, threaten to change supplier! It worked for me ;).

Re wood for stoves, we've just had a shock about the prices - they've doubled . I "bought" [ordered] enough wood to last us for a year, the supplier didn't want to take the money all at once, so I put it in a savings account and paid him as he delivered it. He told me yesterday that he's run out of wood and can't afford to buy any more in at the moment so when he does *my* wood will be at the new price - I'm speechless... that's my budget ruined, again.

On the other hand, when I had the kitchen refurbished I did insist on a huge pantry [cue all the men saying "good grief, what a waste of space/money, all the women oooh-ing and aaah-ing!:rotfl:] and so can take full advantage of any special offers. Mr M and the Henhouse [think "coop"] don't do very many of these, unlike Mr T and Mr A who are both nearly 20 miles away, as for Mr S, he's over 26 miles away.... so, Appr*vedF**d is very handy, but I do have far too many "treats" as that seems to be what they specialise in [or is it just me :o].

Last night we didn't light the fire [having nagged OH for days about roaring fires....] and ended up saving electricity by using rugs/jumpers properly [ie both of us instead of just me;)] and switching off the tv and going to bed at a sensible time. Must remember this trick!

I really must get tidied up enough to make curtains this year, it'll make such a difference.

It's been raining a lot today but the sun's just come out and so it's off to do some washing... ok, spoke to soon, rain's just switched back on again.. hey ho.

It's lovely to be back here - thanks to you all :A
If you see me on here - shout at me to get off and go and get something useful done!! :D
  • I'm dreading the cost of our next load of wood. Normally we buy at summer prices, but we have't stocked up this year because we're moving ... I might see if our supplier will take payment for a load now & deliver it after we've moved.

My wood supplier has increased his prices by 30% before all this kicked off. Said the forestry commission has increased prices so he had to pass on to me. There are no differences in summer and winter prices here - just that no one has wood in the summer so I am lucky I still have a wood shed full as its flipping cold!

Thats a very good idea. Thank you. My little experiment didn't go well. Two solar lights obviously weren't strong enough to banish their fears as the landing light was on when I got up this morning! Oh well it worth a try. I don't have a local Wilkos here so I will have to source the timer gadget elsewhere. I do have a timer which I use when on hols etc so I could try that & plug the adaptor into it. Doh! I think that may have been what you were talking about :)!

i have a feather mattress topper and it definitely makes the bed a lot warmer, used to use an old duvet under the sheet and this also works but it is not as comfy

Sounds like a really good idea but unfortunately DH likes his side of the bed COLD! So no feather mattress topper for me :(

Why not put a single quilt on your side see how that helps better than a matress topper as can also be used as a quilt if this does help then you could get a single topper just for you hth
