I honestly don't really know, gas costs about a third of the price of electric, so I would guess that it is cheaper to use the tap.

And that is why it frustrates me so living in a leccy-only place, and seeing that pretty much everywhere else is too ><

I'm going to buy a large airer for the wet washing. I refuse to use my dryer anymore.

We just looked to see how much electricity the dryer uses and I was shocked at the little monitoring thing working it;s legs off trying to keep up with the speed.

i have a built in tumble dryer and have only used in twice in 2 years, i worked for eon and discovered it used so much electric its a big no no in my house to use it unless its an emergency.
summer washing goes out and if i have a lot of washing il use my airer outside as well, for winter washing goes on airer in hall way and takes about half a day to dry, i never put washing on the radiators as they have to work harder to heat the house if controlled by thermostat.

get an energy monitor it really is worth seeing what costs you more to run.

i always fill my thermos flask up with hot water in the morning which lasts me all day if people come round for a cuppa or if i fancy one, it saves me boiling the kettle.

i will be putting a couple of blankets in the car, as i have dodgy knees and in the winter they can get painful so i plan on chucking a blanket on my lap when i drive (bad going for a 25 year old lol), plus il have one for my 4 year old son in the back.

im going to ikea next week and im going to buy some chunky candles like church ones and stock up for winter.

line my curtains, just got a rug for our bedroom as its laminate and its freezing in the winterso thanks to my mum for a massive red shaggy rug i hope it does the trick lol x

  • I'm trying to persuade dh that we should freegle our tumble drier before we move. I'd honestly rather have the extra space in the utility room. We do use it now and again, but I don't think I'd miss it if we didn't have it - there's a lovely big (south facing I think) sun room at the new house, and I think it would be great for drying washing.

The only think I would miss is the towels as when I line dry them they go stiff and awful.

I only use my tumble dryer for the towels - summer or winter. Thats my only concession. I use dryer balls & I think they do make a difference to the drying time.
Thanks to whomever posted about the wasted hot water in the kettle ie. the 'extra mug of water' that I have to boil when I fill my kettle to the min level. I have tried using a little flask for the last week and don't know if it makes a huge difference to my overall consumption. It is verrry satisfying knowing I am saving a little bit of energy though - I'm very sad :D!

I changed from an electric kettle to a gas one some months ago as we get such hard water here I was always descaling and it doesn't seem to build up so much in a gas one. Tuesday I let the kettle boil dry so it had to be binned. Since then I have been boiling water for my tea and coffee in a small saucepan and I swear its saving me money as I can measure in a mugfull which comes to boil really quickly. I think I may continue doing this for as long as possible but OH, who comes home after working away all week, may have other ideas.

  • Sorry but I had to post this- just been on phone to np*wer who have just given me a really high direct debit amount to pay every month as they set it too low when I joined them and now I owe them loads of money as my direct debit hasn't covered my energy usage! **Or** I can just pay them the money I owe in the next ten days- as if I have it all just sitting around!!!

I can't even switch energy companies as then I will have to pay back the big lump sum anyway- so all I can do is try to massively cut my energy consumption.

If anyone has any OS tips to help with this, I need to try all of them at once! Particularly for reducing gas as that is what costs the most- I have gas heating which is obviously only on to heat the water at this time of year but also a gas hob- not sure if that uses a lot as well??

    Any tips gratefully received :(
