  • You could ask people to give you money for your birthday/christmas instead of presents and then that could be added to your flight money - or are your parents in a position to lend you the money which you can pay back at a later date?

Congratulations on becoming an Auntie soon!!

I second Turnaround Sues ideas...why not ask for money for birthdays etc?

Also, I would definately recommend getting a webcam. Me and mum have one...simple to install and when you register with skype you'll be able to talk to your sister for free! Its brilliant.

Personally though I would go on a moneymaking drive. Do a car boot each week and you could make loads of money. Don't be afraid to ask people to give you all their old stuff to sell..in my experience people are more than happy to offload their stuff!

    Good luck!!

  • Thanks so much everyone for your ideas. Its a bit late to be asking people for money for my bday (Its wed).

Obviously my relies back home sending money would be stupid, it would cost them loads and not = much ££.

I couldn't ask my parents to pay for a trip back home as they did it for me 2 years ago as thats when my sister got married. My sister very kindly got married in August so i could attend, i tried saving up but just couldn't get the money together. (at the time was when we struggled paying our debts and a DMP was being considered)

Come time for the wedding i didn't have the funds to go. Then my parents stepped it and told me to book a flight using their credit card, they borrowed money off their house to cover the credit card cost of the flight. I don't even have to pay that back, they just couldn't bare the idea of me not being home for the wedding, so paid for it.

It's such a hard thing to deal with, im happy she's having a baby, but at the same time miserable at the thought of what i'll miss out on.

When your so far away and you don't know whats going on, its easy to push it out of your mind. But when i went over for her wedding and she had little bits left to organise, that made me sad, sad cos id missed out on going shopping with her for her dress and cake.

Where the only sisters for both sides of our parents families and my sisters children will be my only neices/nephews cos my OH is an only child.

Can i not just push the UK out into the water a bit and let it float closer to Australia.......

Why not go at Xmas instead, actually meet your new nephew/niece - and, as everybody's got time off for Xmas, you'd get to see more "other people".

I'm guessing flights will be cheaper in Dec/Jan than August.
  • I know that might sound a bit extreme, but what about moving back home? Not sure of your circumstances, but could this work?

I'm not sure how this works but might be worth looking at. My brother was telling me his exwife and kids are coming over for the summer but cost high due to school holiday. So they are flying to USA, apparently not the same pressure as school holidays are different. Having a couple of days there and they flying on to UK. They are saving alot by doing this. I think they are flying with Qantas. Maybe if you have a play around with their site it might give you some info.

I would love to go at xmas time, but i've always considered a 2 week holiday, flying all that way to be a waste of money. Considering that when i went back 2 yrs ago for her wedding i had 5 1/2 weeks.

Not really. OH and i owe too much money here, flat wouldn't sell as we have a 100% mortgage and 3 yrs left on a fixed rate.

OH is not my OH by law, as in where not married yet and even if we were we couldn't just up and move to Australia, he'd need a visa all that business. Also OH has never been to Australia, so quiet rightly he's not keen on moving out to a place he has never been to before.

His work said no to his holiday request when we were going to go together for my sisters wedding. So i ended up going on my own. So yep none of my family have met my fiancee.

It's Western Australia (Perth) that my sister/parents live.
