Tenerife

I'd be very interested to know what people think of Tenerife as a holiday destination. Good or Bad and why?

Hi We went to Tenerife Easter 2006 for 4 day break to Los Cristianos. We hated it. It was all timeshare touts and people pestering you to buy sunglasses etc. You couldnt even enjoy a meal at night, you would be interupted by 5 or 6 people coming to your table to buy sunglasses. Wouldnt go back. However, saying that I know people who love it, but not my idea of a nice holiday resort, couldnt find anything appealing at all. My mother in law and partner have a place in the North and they assure me its beautiful. Perhaps we went to the wrong place?

Los Christianos is notoriously bad for timeshare touts :(
We used to go loads, both pre-children and with children. If you want to go to the south-which most people do-then there are loads of lovely hotels etc in Adeje and Fanabe....they've kind of grown on to Las Americas.
We used to go summer and winter, and we never ever had duff weather, although Feb-April is known to be a bit wet.
I'd go back in a second

I've only been to South Tenerife and it is very similar to the post above in my experience. Unless you want to hire a car and get out and about from the resorts you will be left with drinking, eating and sunbathing. The weather is lovely though. Also if you do decide to go and have the cash upgrade your plane seats to more legroom - the cattle class seats are truly atrocious for the five hours they expect you to sit in them.
The early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese
  • been to tenerife lots of times as stated adege and fanabe are nicer be carefull with areas in adege because this resort stretches into hills and can me big walk to the beach .you dont need to hire a car if you dont want to the bus service is very good and because it goes in and out of towns and resorts allows you to see what else is on offer.as fo legroom seats im 5ft8 and havent had much of a problem weve recently had recaro seats a few times now on flights weve had and very comfy

Thanks for all the repies so far. I should add that I live in Tenerife and I love it but residents here are discussing why Tenerife is so quiet compared to how it used to be. Some say it's flight prices, others the recession. Lots of reasons are being discussed like bad entertainment, high drink prices, it's dirty and run down. I would just like to get opinions from the tourist point of view as the people discussing this are residents. I am not in the tourist industry at all, I am just curious, so please keep the opinions coming.

Hi been to Tenerife many many times, stayed at the Villa Cortes last September and got two weeks B&B for 2 people £1680 {not Bad] nice hotel, enquired for the same two weeks this year £2550.Just booked an all inclusive in a 5star in the caribean for £2600 for the same dates, does that answer your question, also whilst in Tenerife went to the piano bar next to the fountains and ordered 2 gin &tonics 15 euros another reason why people are staying away.It is such a shame that the hoteliers and bar owners have become so greedy,in my case they can not blame the tour operators because i book the hotels direct

I normally go a couple of times a year to Tenerife and always stay in Los Gigantes which has everything good about Tenerife but little of the bad.
However to answer your question I think hoteliers and restauranters have become too greedy and failed to appreciate that travellers are much more internet-savvy than they used to be.
Unfortunately parts of Greece and Turkey are going the same way.
And all of these places are about five years behind mainland Spain in waking up to the problem.

    Hi Burja

I love tenerife and our family have timeshare in palm beach 2 weeks march so will be back soon, 2 weeks nov

I'm a destination expert on tripadvisor and there are lots of threads on the price of drinks etc

do you have a bar over there, have to say that the new front in los c is lovely now
  • We often "holiday" in Costa Adeje, we love it! ... but the street touts are very annoying :(
"Do not look back and grieve over the past, for it is gone, and do not be troubled about the future, for it has yet to come. Live in the present, and make it so beautiful that it will be worth remembering"
  • We also love adeje. We tend to go in jan/feb, feb this year and looking forward to it,this time we are going to stay in a villa in chayofa and have a car, which will make a change as we usaully go to gran bahia del duque/villa cortes/or la plantacion. The villa looks stunning and is half the price of b&b at these other hotels. However, all of these have gone up massively in price, and as it tends not to be our main holiday,we just go for winter sun, this year I could not justify the prices they were asking compared to last year!!

We tend to eat out all the time in the evening, and there are some restaurants we have been going to for 20years,that are still going strong and there not cheap, but high quality, however,we did find there was alot of poorer restaurants springing up,not good and expensive. We are happy to pay for quality, but still dont want to be ripped off, so we'll see how prices compare this year,I fear the worst and think it may be a different winter sun desatination nxt yr,if food costs etc are ridiculously high. However it is in the eurozone and most places are struggling as the pound is so weak against the euro.
