well for starters why was the other vehicle coming down that road, it is private property. You see all the time "you park / enter this place at your own risk the owner of the land do not take any repsonsibility / libility of whatever happens."

In the UK you can have a sign saying "enter at your own risk" or as common in car parks "We accept no responsibility for any damage caused in this car park". These have grounding as you cannot get away from your legal responsibilities just by putting a sign up.

For instance if you had a sign up saying "Enter at your own risk" and your postman was injured due to something that was down to your legal negligence he/she could still sue you.

The other matter is the laws definition of a highway is very open and deems the public highway to be as roughly where the general public have access to. In theory if you were off road driving on common land or a green road they could prosecute you for un insured driving if you had no insurance. (The best example of this is the old story of someone hits your car in a car park and tells you that you cannot claim as it is not the public highway / private property. Their insurance will still have to pay out if it was their fault)

If you are not going to take it onto the public highway or with other motor vehicles why do you want insurance against a car accident with another motor vehicle?

And as discussed, no tax / MOT would invalidate any insurance policy you took out,

I'm sure there is no legal obligation to insure a vehicle which is not to be used on the roads

Third party doesn't necessarily mean "other vehicles".
What about a boundary fence or wall?
What about a passenger who is injured if the car overturns?
What about someone walking on the private land who is struck by the vehicle?

All these would be Third parties and would be entitled to claim.

You maybe right in that "legally" insurance is not required since it's land not used by the public but morally and sensibly it maybe worth having. I'm sure the premium would be low if the insurer was told all the details.

Just to take darichs point further, there will be legitimate visitors to the property, e.g. tradesmen, postmen and meter readers.
Passengers also includes members of your own family.

What would you do if you came off the dirt track and rolled the car, seriously injuring your wife / child so that they needed constant medical care. Your insurance would pay an award sufficient to cover these costs. Could you?
