Yes, in theory the phone is useless. In practice, however, someone determined can get the software and flash the phone, thus removing the phone lock. Such software is available on the web.

Getting back to the IMEI business, if you give it to the police, they will put it on the MEND and immobilise.com databases. The police have access to these databases 24/7. If they stop an unsavoury character and are a bit sharp, they compare the displayed IMEI (*#06#) with that on the inside label on the phone. If they don't match then alarm bells ring. Also both IMEI can be searched, so even if the phone has been "chipped" (cracked, unblocked= identity changed) then there's still a good chance of nicking the bloke on the receiving end. It might be a disincentive to handle another hot phone......and then the window licker said to me...0

That's nothing.. a friend left hers in a cinema - she was the last one out that night and the only other people to go in there were cleaners. They took her phone.. and used the phone to run up £300 worth of calls to india and pakistan mobiles and premium lines before she noticed it was gone.. she reported it in the morning when she noticed but it was too late. The next morning they called her to say "oh we've got your phone.. we work at the cinema come and get it" but she went to the cinema and they'd given her a false name.. the cinema are investigating their staff but it's just bizarre..0
