Family wanting a dog

  • This may seem a dumb question, but genuine.

Dogs and cats which don't moult or shed their coat, how do they actually get rid of it? Obviously they're going to replace it regularly like any animal...so how does it work? Do they require regular clipping because it just keeps growing and never falls out? I'm sorry if I seem stupid, but I just can't imagine an animal which doesn't drop any hair at all!

It actually isn't much different than us. We comb our hair and remove the loose hair, groom a dog and remove their loose hair. :) All dogs need a certain amount of grooming even if it's only once a week.
Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p

    I live in my head - I find it's safer there:p

Can you contact local rescues and see about fostering a poodle or similar? Talk to them about the issues and see what they have available, to suit your needs. Tell your son its only short term and explain (if doesnt know) about fostering. Im sure they would help you, as its better to check, than get a new dog, then have to rehome it or take it to the rescue anyway. :)
I know my spelling is shocking  It is alot better than it used to be though :rotfl:

my ex seems to be able to be around a parsons jack russell without too much bother...not exactly a rottie, but they are lovely dogs.

My family used to look after a Parson's called Kiri (mother worked as a dogsitter)...I loved her, but everyone else (quite rightly) just thought she was nuts. She was, but I guess that's why I liked her :D. She'd pee doing a handstand - I kid you not. Never ever seen a dog do that and I've been around a fair few (we're talking hundreds. lol).

If it's just hair that your son is allergic to, then I'd recommend a labradoodle (assuming it's one of the ones that wont shed). Poodles are nice dogs (again, looked after a peach miniature poodle called Bruce. lol) but I suspect the standards may not be the ideal family dog...with the labrador influence as well, though, should be ideal :)
