Where to buy LEAN ish minced lamb

With my lamb meatball curry recipe one of my favs I would like tips for lean minced lamb.

I got some in Tesco, £2.50 for 500g, but its 16% fat (that was the lean one:eek: ).

I saw some in Waitrose (I think the fat content was similar) & it was £2.50 for a tiny one:eek:

Asda only had fatty mince.

Is there lower than the Tesco 16% fat one?

Thank you

  • Minced lamb is always going to be fatty. Just drain off the fat that comes out when you cook it. I can't help with the supermarkets unfortunately as I'm a butcher shopper.
Life is too short to waste a minute of it complaining about bad luck. Find joy in the simple things, show your love for those around you and be grateful for all that you have. :)

Your butcher. Choose a leaner cut and ask him to mince it for you. It will cost the price of the cut so may be better to mince yourself or do what was posted above.

With the lamb meatball recipe you don't cook it loose first.

I did think about asking the butcher to mince up some lamb for me, but it would prob be 750g of lamb fillet & god only knows what that would cost:eek:

With minced beef I always dry fry it first in a very hot pan until it's browned then put it into a sieve and pour boiling water from the kettle out of it. I don't know the exact scientific amount but it does remove a lot of the fat. It may not be ideal with mince for meatballs as it usually needs to be raw when you make them but it's great for spag bol's, chilli's etc.

Otherwise you could use less meat (so cheaper) and pad it out with finely chopped/food processed veg & lentils?

There are some types of meat (and other stuff) that I have just stopped buying now due to the rising costs. We used to have a steak (fillet or sirloin) about every fortnight as a treat, we haven't had it for months now as it's gone way too expensive for my budget. I have bought a single steak before now though and made it into stroganoff or similar, that way we're still getting the taste etc but without a hunk of meat on the plate making up the bulk of our meal.

If I can't get to a butcher which is my best option I usually opt for waitrose. It may be slightly more expensive but the meat is extremely good quality . When I buy stewing steak I use every bit, but when bought from other super markets I end up chopping off bits of fat and gristle..When using mince I don't get tons of fat that needs draining off. In the end for me is works out better value getting from waitrose

Tesco do extra lean mince but its 3 quid for a fairly small pack. Might be wrong, but from memory it think its below 5% fat. If i cant afford that i just buy the standard stuff, brown it then run hot water over it like other people have suggested. Do it in an empty sink and give it a good rinse afterwards though, otherwise it sets....disgusting!

If you don't seal the meatballs in the frying pan first and just bake them in the oven the fat will then come out. If you can put the meatballs on a dripthrough tray to cook even better.

(Obviously sealing meatballs and then baking is best for flavour and texture but as you are more concerned with the fat content)

It will set in the pipes and block the sink, do it over a bowl and when the fat gets cold and sets, put in in the rubbish (or perhaps give it to the birds).
