You may well be right, I have no experience of adult children or step children, so I say what I say out of a desire to have my chicks in the nest as long as possible.

The university son with no job, loan spent and overdraft at its limit rings very true here as well. Maybe if I had been less indulgent he would be more independent.

its a very hard line to balance, but i can only speak personally and i see him as making them become a bit reliant on him due to partly his own needs for company and partly as overcompensation because they lost their mum when they were small, so i know its not as straight forward as i make out

i also know that my perception of children is somewhat academic because of my job, i see so many children growing up, unprepared for life with the parents needs having taken precedence instead of the need for the child/teen to be shown and given independence, so i can be a bit 'professional' rather than parental when it comes to choices like that

Providing they are able-bodied they could consider cycling rather than paying transport costs - which would help save a bit of cash. I used to live Leyton way and you can be in central London within 40 mins on a bike.

Also - are they totally wedded to Leyton? I remember seeing rooms in east Ham for 60-70/week a year or so ago. And up until middle of 2007 I was paying £55/week for a room in east Ham. Hitting the student accommodation boards might be the way to go.

Why are you searching for them? Let them be independent and look at gumtree.com themselves. That's the website I always used when looking to rent in London (and moveflat.com)

I think Silvercar has picked on the reason behind this....
