Mobile phone help

I want to transfer my phone book from my old Orange PAYG phone to my new BT HTC mobile.
The new phone manual says:
The real problem is that the screen on the old phone is knackered and 90% unreadable, so I can't follow any onscreen instructions or navigate around.
My son has an Orange PAYG phone, so I could use that.
All help gratefully received!

Backbiter, you might get a better response if you posted your query on the mobile phones thread. :beer:0

Will try that. In my experience there are pretty knowledgeable people on here whatever the technology!0

Very true Backbiter. But future visitors may not think to look in the "Techie Stuff" board when searching for mobile information.

The phone should have a copy to sim function.
Once the contacts are on your sim just pop the sim card into your new phone and select copu contacts from sim.
You said you have some problems with your phone so you may not be able to do this. Can you connect it up to the computer? If you can you may be able to access your phonebook from their.
Hope this helps !0 -
Hi,
if you are keeping the same number, then just transfer the sim, though make sure that
all you numbers are saved to the sim card, some may be saved to the phone, shift
these to the sim.
Check: Contacts > Settings > will either be, Sim, Phone or Sim and Phone, I always
save to sim only, incase of changing phone later.
If you are not keeping the same number, then as before, make sure all numbers are
on sim, put sim in new phone, then transfer all numbers to that phone,
put in new sim and transfer all numbers to new sim.0 -
My screen is unreadable, so sadly I can't do this:Check: Contacts > Settings > will either be, Sim, Phone or Sim and Phone, I always
save to sim only, incase of changing phone later.
So I put the SIM into my son's Orange PAYG phone, which couldn't find any contacts, so they must be on the old phone.
So my only hope seems to be hooking it up to the PC. I'll go into my local orange shop with my son's phone and ask for help in transferring all contacts. They might have a solution!!
Thanks for your advice.0 -
UPDATE
Three phone shops I tried were unable to help, but while showing them the problem screen I noticed I could bring up the top left of my list of contacts on the screen. Having located the phonebook, I then had to try and press the correct button to find the 'copy to screen' command. This was not possible as only the top left hand corner was readable. The rest was a big yellow splodge.
Back home I rang Sony Ericsson and described the problem. The guy said there was nothing they could do, but I said with his help I could rescue my contacts.
He was very sceptical but went off and found an identical phone. He was able to dictate the various onscreen menus to me, so I was able to navigate to the Advanced menu then the Copy to Sim function (even though I couldn't see either of them, I could see the top three commands on each menu, so I could move down the correct number of times on each menu). He then told me which of the two buttons below the screen to press, and I was able to copy the contacts.
I then put the SIM in my son's phone, copied the phonebook to his phone, put my new SIM from my BT phone in his, and then copied the phonebook to the new SIM, which then went back into my new phone, and BINGO.
Unbelievably happy to have retrieved everything when it hadn't looked good at all.0 -
