Ripped up cheque...

  • It'd be mutilated, whether stuck together or not. So we'd be unlikely to accept it.

Are you sure Bradford and Bingley wouldn't issue you another cheque, if you asked nicely enough?

I have until 2 MAy 2009 to deposit it into my bank account

Is that a fact - or based on the premise someone said it's valid for 12 months? As cheques are generally rejected after a maximum of 6 months - so that may spell the end of it anyway.

Lots of cheques get mutilated in post opening machinery in large postrooms (Credit Cards / Utilities / HMRC). They stick them back together and write (in their cases a rubber stamp) a brief note to the effect 'mutilated - in error' and sign / date it. BUT ..... they then generally pay these via the back door and directly into their Bank's clearing system. You have to pay it over the counter, so it will be more difficult ..... but it should work the same way.

However - it will further draw to attention that it's likely out of date. And I think you lose out at that point.

Most dividend cheques will say on them that they are valid for 12 months.

I once failed to cash a dividend cheque and a new one was issued (I think after about 8 months) without me making any request. I believe it was the registrar, rather than the company. Can you contact them?

Strange ... mine never did. But I switched all I hold to scrip in lieu of dividend anyway ... so don't see them these days.
