Ripped up cheque...

Was getting rid of oldpaperwork - accidently ripped upa cheque from Bradford & Bingley (remember them??) into 4 pieces.

Its a computer printed cheque.

It was the final divident payments for having a few shares with them - before they went ***s-up! No chance of getting a re-issue

Will my bank accept it?

  • I think you can only cash a cheque up to 6 months after the date on it so it's probably too late to cash it anyway. Was it for a large amount?

I think dividend cheques are only valid for 12 months so any older then that and I think you have missed the boat
  • Its within the 12 months

I have until 2 MAy 2009 to deposit it into my bank account
  • Stick it together with cellotape, that it to the bank and see what they say. Nothing ventured nothing gained,

they should take it - its the information on the cheque they need, it doesnt matter (or it shouldnt) matter the condition its in.

Try it! I recently banked a large cheque that had been through the washing machine in my jeans back pocket! Went through unquestioned.

I think as long as the words and figures still match and haven't been tampered with they should still accept it.

They won't accept a ripped up cheque, as they say they don't know if the issuer ripped it up (and maybe you stole it from the bin or something!). If you wanted to get rid of a cheque, you would rip it up you see. They'll probably be able togive you some advice though.

There should be a way to avoid being ripped off purely because you have ripped up!

Why not personal message one of the bank people who frequent the site? They have even been known to give the correct advice occasionally! :D

You never know. I might be able to lead one over here.
