I would suggest you start with Business Link https://www.businesslink.gov.uk for an initial enquiry. They will also advise you of other support out there that would be appropriate for you.

I think the best thing you can do is have a look at the sticky at the top of this board about starting your own business, and the one on business bank accounts. There's also been various discussions about accepting payments for internet sales, and book-keeping: whether you need a 'proper' program or whether Excel will do. So a search or skim for that kind of post would be useful. Then, when you've worked out which of your questions still need answering, come back with them.

Good luck, and welcome to the boards.

  • Hi there,

As I run a small business with my husband, we need a Point-of Sale machine to enable us to take money over the phone through credit/debit cards. We had one with Barclays Merchant Services but encountered too much trouble from them. Does anyone know where we can purchase one of these machines in the UK (they are free in USA), or of one we can rent for a reasonable amount each month, plus with reasonable percentages? Nat West have one but monthly charges and percentages are higher than the Barclays one.
    Many thanks.

  • Just a couple fo points here.
firstly you can do your books yourself you don't need an accoutant unless a limited company and taking over about 20k a year. It is fairly straightforward to do a tax return these days.
Business link do basic start up courses ro free even if you don't manage to get any other money out of them.
Depending on the business and where you live you may be eligible for regeneration or rural money as well.
You also don't need a business account to run a business, you can run through a personal account which is cheaper. they don't particuallry like it and if you do loads of banking may casue some problem but I've been doing that for a very long time without any porblems. As a micro sole tader it is about the only perk
When I first started up a very long time ago I played it by the book accoutnant, business bank accoiunt etc but cost a fortune and wasn't necessary

I'm sorry I can't give any specific information about window cleaning. Businesslink (earlier in this thread) would be good people to talk to about any business. Obvious things to think about are insurance - to cover you (if you fall off a ladder), the householder (if you put your ladder through a window or cause other damage), anyone else (if you drop your bucket from a great height and damage anyone or anything underneath). And to check your vehicle insurer knows you need business use.
    Good luck!

  • Hello.

I am looking into starting up my own online cloth nappy retail business and am confused about a few things, which are going to make me sound really stupid!

I have requested wholesale prices from various companies, but am not sure if the prices quoted include VAT? I've heard a lot about "VAT receipts" and know nothing about it, let alone how to make or ask for one...do I need to?

I have found out about possible training and funding local to me, which is all very helpful, but am wondering if it will fully meet my needs.

Will I need business insurance if working from home?

Where is the best place to have my website designed and hosted (including domain name, email address linked to the website and secure shopping facility)

Will I need to register with Companies House?

Can I just be a sole trder or will I need to be limited?

Will the business training teach me all this so am I wasting your time???

Thanks in advance, and any cheapskate top tips are welcome!
