I remember trying to catch chickenpox at school so i could have a skive. Mum told me later that I was safe as I already had a mild dose in infancy. Caught shingles when i was 16, mild dose again. Then in adulthood one of the kids caught chickenpox and guess who caught it...It certainly wasn't a mild dose this time !!!!!! It was a nightmare.

The doctor told me that you can catch shingles from chickenpox but not vice versa as it's something to do with the herpes virus already being in your body.

Agree with letting people at work know tho.

    I've never had chicken pox ~ I'm 33.

My son got it when he was 5, then my daughter who was 3 at the time caught it straight away from him.

Touch wood I never get it!

  • It can be very bad in adults. My friend caught it from my boy and ended up in hospital. He was seriously ill for a week. He had spots everywhere....and I mean EVERYWHERE! On his eyes, in his lungs and inside his ..... i'll leave that to your imagination! I didn't know you could get spots internally but apparently you can. He was exposed to the virus for about 5 minutes tops when he gave us a lift somewhere. He also swore blind he'd had chicken pox before.

OP you've probably already got it. the chicken pox virus is in your system 2 weeks before the spots appear - in fact the spots coming means you're starting to get over it. and i think you do start to feel under the weather and possibly a bit "fluey" before the spots come.

    Can i just note,
Iv had the chicken pox but its worth while if you work or oh works you tell your work place incase there are pregnant women at your work place.

I work in a call centre and when someones child has chicken pox it goes on the board to make pregnant women aware that someones child has chicken pox as the collegue may be a carrier. although they may not get the chicken pox themself theres still a risk they are carrying it.

Just a though, (i dont mean to scare)
I'm a full time mum and don't work but have informed the people who have been in contact with me already. It's up to them to make the decision as to what they want to do.

Thanks for all your comments, I'll watch this space I suppose with me and my daughter....although dreading it hate being poorly!

I'm 31 and have never had it either. My 2 year old had it just before xmas and I didn't catch it from her either.

Maybe I'm naturally immune if that's possible.

I think natural immunity is possible... I've had chicken pox twice and shingles... I think I've passed a good amount of immunity onto my daughter, she's come into contact with it quite a few times and not had it... Even after spending a weekend at my Mum's house when she had it last year... aged 49! (She also caught it off my brothers when she was 30something too)

  • For those adults who have never knowingly caught it, you can pay to have a chickenpox vaccine.

A friend of mine caught it when pg with no 2, she had to be given drugs to help protect the baby.

I've never had it and neither have any of my 3 children. My grandchildren haven't caught it either despite playing with other children who develped it. Do you think some people are naturally immune from it?
