No you don't have to but halifax current account transfers to the isa and vice versa are same day, where as from another bank it would be a few days, as is everywhere.
and trust me they do not get commision at all0 -
i went into halifax yesterday and opened 2 mini isa's
(Isa saver direct. online and telephone)
1 for the wife and 1 for myself for the year 2005/6
gave all the relevent information
paid them a cheque for £6000
no talk of opening any other account.
all done easily.

Have you already got some form of halifax account then? If not how are you going to withdraw your money?
I also opened 2 Halifax isa saver direct accounts (the wife and I) with the halifax this week as a result of reading articles on this site (only with £10 each - my intention was to transfer the additional £2990 into each from my Lloyds bank account once they were up and running). I was also asked to open a current account by a salesman that seemed about 12 years old ( I must be turning into a grumpy old man!). I refused as I dont need another current account. I now find that I cannot transfer funds into or out of the isa from any accounts other than those operated by the Halifax. I dont have any! How do I withdraw my money then? I'm really annoyed! If I close the isas in a fit of rage I cant open any more in this tax year can I? I feel as if I now have no choice but to open a current account with the halifax. I wont do this as a matter of principle! There was no indication on their website that you couldn't transfer funds from other bank accounts.0 -
Just open a web saver after you've registered for Online banking.0

went into halifax branch today to enquire about deposting money into my Online ISA. I don't have a current a/c with them and the bank assistant was at lost for a bit :P After some uncertain conversation between assistant and supervisor, I was finally told that I can take a cheque into the branch and pay in there. Don't really want to be sending a cheque by post to any where.
If I want to withdraw money, apparently I will have to contact Internet banking.0
