I suspect the mother went in and asked why she now has a credit card rather than a debit card, which obviously the bracnh staff wouldn't know...

I really can't believe that none of the staff knew about this. From April 2008, HSBC will be moving away from the mastercard and maestro brand. Main reason for this, is that VISA is more acceptable worldwide. Some customers will still receive some maestro or even mastercards. This is a slow process.

VISA debit card is similar to the VISA electron, VISA delta cards issued by barclays. They are debit meaning they will take your cash!

Are you saying that from April 2008, HSBC will issue VISA debit cards AND VISA credit cards?? I would have thought HSBC will maintain the mastercard brand solely for credit cards?

Which is more worrying, because at least the letter my First Direct Visa Debit came with had, in massive bold type, "This is a debit card NOT a credit card". We've had to make so many allowances and differently phrased warnings for this switch, simply because so many people instinctively associate the name "Visa" with credit cards.
  • do you know if hsbc is changing from mastercard to visa?

On credit cards? Don't think so. HSBC's previous Visa cards (Gold and Platinum) were discontinued yonks ago.

I think they are but the debit card change is happening first.

You think they are? Based on what?
  • I have just rung up First Direct (part of HSBC) for a new card as I had been having trouble paying for stuff by chip and pin for a couple of weeks...they said the new one would be a Visa Debit card, and after reading this thread I have noticed that the big number on the card will not just be 4 numbers then my sort code and account number....as I have had a few maestro cards from them i had got it all remembered so i could still buy stuff online without having to go hunting in my purse for my card :rotfl:but now i will have a whole new random number....I must remember not to try and use the number thats on the maestro card and just change the issue number like i used to lol!!!

I also hope my new card will be black like it is now, looks much nicer than my grey HSBC card :T

There's a picture of the First Direct Visa debit card on their website. Look it up -just click on banking. And yes, it is black.
