If this the way the govt are going to create a whole load of new jobs? Bringing call centres back to the UK and hiring "installation engineers" to staple cables to your skirting board ?0 -
I would have thought that most people would have been able to get at least 2meg.
There are only a few exchanges left in the country that are not ADSL enabled.
I live in the middle of nowhere up on Exmoor and I connect at 6.5/7 meg !!!!

WADR, you're either
1. not getting "6.5/7 meg", or
2. you're not "in the middle of nowhere"
The 2 just don't go together. As 'Conflict' says, you must be within around 1.5 mile of the exchange if you're truly getting those speeds, which, as exchanges are usually in a town centre, means you can't be in the middle of nowhere.

Where I am in Huddersfield at the moment I can't even get broadband at all and this is very large estate. When I first moved here BT line checker thingy says 4 miles from exchange and max I could expect was 0.5 meg. I gave it a whirl as NTL had a very bad rep back then, but the connection was horrendous and there was that much noise on the line that it would've been quieter in a night club on a Saturday night  . I think the most I saw from it was 128 kb  . Thankfully NTL started to get their act together a bit and offered us the 'up to 20 meg' service round here and having now been on it for over 2 years I have no complaints at all; it's always well into double figures on the speed test sites. :j

"We know that every aspect of our lives in local communities - every school, every hospital, every workplace and even every home - will be dependent on the services that the digital network provides."
Gawd knows how my brother will cope then, he hasn't even got a television or land line telephone let alone broadband!
He does have a laptop though (got it second hand for £25) but uses it only to play DVD's.We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
I was hoping that by 2012 I would be able to get 24Mb. I suppose I will just have to continue to cope on my current 15Mb.Wins 2007 :Boots £125, XBOX 360 & 3 games 2008:5 David Gray CDs £10 DVD voucher 2 Crossed Bones DVD & chocolate Torch. I have Virgin Media ADSL and every time I have tested it it is ridiculously slow.
Just tested it again and I've got the fastest speed right now that I have ever ever had from them:

I'm getting 2.5MBps out of an "up to 8MB" connection.
Every other time I've tested it over the last 18 months it's been about 1/10th of that. Must be a miracle.0 -

Trying using http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/. Speedtest.net has a bad reputation.
