royal mail postage

I don't think that the new postage system is complicated enough - surely the RM could charge differnt prices based on the colour of the packaging, what it smells like or maybe whether it makes a rattly noise or not ?
If you can manage to register an account on eBay and PayPal, and get a listing up, you have demonstrated enough intuition that weighing a package and checking its dimensions doesn't prove a huge challenge. It's not rocket science, is it?0 -

Sounds painful
Made the mistake of trying to post a box 61cm long 2nd class this week - after much measuring I was told max was 60cm, so would have to pay £2.50 extra for a parcel... fortunatly a pair of scisors and some tape soon solved that0 -

so the new pricing system saved you money0 -
As Custardy says it looks like the stamp came off. They would then be charged 1 pound plus 42p for large letter second class. I would refund and proceed as Soo suggests on post #20

Thickness of the packaging is also an issue isn't it? Was it too thick to be classed as a normal letter?
Yes, size and thickness matter now.
I posted some items last week in envelopes that would go through the hand held size gauge in the PO but only if you pressed the items in the envelopes flat and kind of wiggled them through.
The lady said they had to go large letter because there isn't someone at the sorting office sorting them by hand to do what we did, a machine does it and it would reject them as too big.:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0 -

In a twisted kind of way, although if Yoda's maixim "size matters not" had been applied, and just went on the weight as (i think) it used to, then we would all have saved a load of time.
I'm being slightly tounge in cheek here (for the benefit of the serious in the house) - I still think its pretty amazing that I can post something in the south of England and have it in the north of Scotland the next day for as little as 46p !
I've not heard of Zonal pricing - the suggestion is that it will cost more or less depending where in the UK you are posting... the RM need to think carefully about this - I'm sure its only eBay keeping a good chunk of their operation going (if my post office is anything to go by), and this could cause a lot of problems.0 -

If they were to be classed as Parcel instead of larger letter, the charge would have been 95p (2nd class) instead of 52, so £1.43 including the £1 charge... it's close but its not right.
So reckon Custardy is probably right.
It does state on the size guide that items have to fit through that gap half weigh and then fall through with their own weight (i.e. shouldn't stick against the sides)0 -

it used to exist in some areas(way before my time) but it was the opposite
cheaper post for local items
however RM have already discussed this with the regulator.
it was knocked back this time but dont think it wont be put forward again.
this is exactly what all those competitors do.they cherry pick the zones they want and ignore the low profit areas.
also USPS has just applied to drop from 6 day to 5 days a week delivery.RM could make mahoooosive cuts dropping the 6th day.
