Unless you can get cable, I think Mobile Broadband would be your only way to go, assuming you are unable/unwilling to have a BT line fitted. I imagine North London is fairly reliable, you'll have to check the coverage on the different networks' websites, but be warned it is more expensive and slower than fixed line broadband.

I used Mobile BB for a month or so as a Net connection when moving house and it was perfectly usable for web browsing, email, downloading the odd track from iTunes etc. but wouldn't want to do really heavy downloading. It averaged about 1Mbps on sustained transfers.

The final caveat on mobile BB is you will pay for each and every byte, if you sign up to a package with a 3Gb limit, that's what you will get. Don't expect the sort of usage allowances you get with fixed line BB.

Hi, I wouldn't chose Vodafone. They provide my internet and I have a had problems with them. The coverage is fine but they claim I have gone over my download limit, which I have not and are charging me an extra £15 this month on top of the £15 I already pay them. As it is a new contract there si no way out. This happened twice. Orange and o2 appear to have better deals so I'd advise to look into them.
  • Hello,
Like yourself I didn't want a home tel line, therefore hopefully saving me some money. I chose Orange mobile broadband-what a load of rubbish! The connection/download speeds are so unbelievably slow. Had I known how bad it would be I would have never have taken out the contract. Have tried to get out of my contract as I feel like I have been mis sold a product-was told when I purchased item that download speed would be on par or slightly better than dial up-I wish! Even tried to get my contract switched to their 'static' broaband & pay £20 a month instead of my current £15 for my mobile broadband but they won't even allow me to do this! So unless you are happy to wait forever for your emails to load etc, I say stay clear!

I have the t mobile broadband on a 10gig plan, its not a massive limit but t mobile dont charge you for going over the limit, they just warn you its monitored. Speeds arent to bad averaging 1.3mbits sometimes a little higher although recently its been quite slow but still useable.

If you were going down the mobile BB route, PAYG may be more flexible than contract if your needs fluctuate.

For instance, with 3 as an example, if you know you will only be using it lightly one month, you could just get 1Gb for £10 rather than 3Gb for £15.

Also, if you're using it a lot - using 3 again as an example... on most contract plans if you exceed your allowance you will end up having to pay (steep-ish) overage charges until the start of the next billing period, often per Mb... with 3 PAYG you can just buy another bundle of data straight away and keep going.
  • Hi there,Thanks to all of you for taking time to reply..I will probably live to regret this, but I've decided to overlook 'Iorenas' better judgement and have taken out an 18 month contract with Vodafone and the 3GB mobile broadband service they provide. My only real reason for this is because I'm already with Vodafone for my mobile and never experienced any loss of signal (in my area). Also and more significantly Vodafone agreed to reduce the monthly payments by half (to £7.50) for the length of the contract and give me £50 cash back. This is a deal open to all existing Vodafone customers until the end of the month (tomorrow). I will undoubtedly be using my 14 day free no quibbles trial ruthlessly as possible to ensure the mobile broadband route meets all my needs.!! Thanks again and enjoy the weekend.. John

Just make sure you know how much per (possibly Mb not Gb) you are paying if you go over the allowance.
