I'm in a bit of a bind and I was hoping I could get some advice. My daughter broke the leg (Arm?) off my glasses this morning but I can't afford to buy a new pair. My prescription is quite high (apparently) and I can't do much without them. Does anyone have any advice as to what I can do to get a new pair? I don't get paid for another two weeks, so I'm going to have to wait until then anyway and they are kinda staying on my face, just about.

    Any advice appreciated

    Thanks

    Sarah

Take your spectacles into vision express, they are about the only high street opticians with a decent lab these days. The might be able to put a spare side on your glasses to tide you over, or if not possible the lenses can be cut into a new frame if a suitable one can be found, although this is difficult if they are bifocals or varifocals.

I know this is unhelpful but anyone who can't manage without their glasses for a couple of weeks really should have a second pair....:o sorry...

The screw is still in there but I took them in to Vision Express on Saturday and they said they can't do anything with them. Something has snapped off and a new pair are the only option. Sadly, for Vision Express, I can't afford to go there. Specsavers is looking a likely option but I had my lenses thinned for the pair I am wearing and to do that again would cost £150(!). So, bottle tops, it is then.

And agreed, re the spare pair. Have been wearing glasses for 21 years and have never had a spare pair. Doh. But Specsavers are doing a buy 1 get another free thing, so that's two birds. Now just have to wait for payday. And a small miracle. :)

Thanks for all your help, peeps. Will also start putting some money aside each month, just in case this happens again. Lopsided glasses making me dizzy...

DD (19) has just phoned saying she thinks she may need glasses as she is having problems looking at stuff through the microscopes at university, getting headaches etc.

I would really like to go somewhere that would test her eyesight and provide glasses the same day, the way that optical express used to do.

Does anyone know if there are any places that will do this?

DH would be willing to drive us to Leeds or York etc.

Quite often the companies will supply the lens you want but you have to ask them

I can certainly do the -5.50 cyl, but could you PM me with the rest of the prescription.

With a cyl this large the sphere value is also important when deciding on the availability of lenses.
  • I remember reading that the tax/duty free amount for buying glasses from overseas via the internet is higher than the usual £18 limit on other types of products. It's something to do with the specialist nature of the prescription spectacles I think.

Does anybody know what the tax/duty free limit is for these?

    thanks.
