I think you are just missing the stage of adding these audio books to the library. Once that is done, it'll sync automatically.
It's very easy, follow Marty's link above and read about how to use iTunes, and how to add a song (which is the same as an audio book file) manually. Usually the "add to library" command...0 -

iTunes is really easy and simple to use once you get the hang of having things in your library, and then i just plug in and sync..
i swear by iTunes, and have since it came out, replacing RealJukebox...
IMO nothing comes close
