Scour the charity shops.
In the last couple of years I have picked up a Mrs Beeton, 2 Margarite Pattens and the Daily Express Book of wartime Cookery, published in 1939. If you can ignore all the recipes for tripe and heart they are really useful.
It might also be worth investing in a couple of the current cookery magazines out there as they seem to be doing alot of "credit crunch" recipes atm.0 -
I have (well it's my MIL's but its on long-term loan:D) an excellent little book called "The Austerity Cookbook" by Bridget Ardley. Published in 1975 it's along the lines of Shirley Goode, Bernadine Lawrence, Kitchen in the Hills. Lots of wartime recipes and frugal meals - she emphasises the importance of cutting down on waste and using leftovers .
I really should look on Amazon for a copy of my own.
foreign correspondent - it also contains 11 recipes for rabbit, let me know it you would like any of them."Men are generally more careful of the breed(ing) of their horses and dogs than of their children" - William Penn 1644-1718
We live in a time where intelligent people are being silenced so that stupid people won't be offended.0 -

I hated the new edition, there were some good recipes in it but she had taken out the section on programmed eating which you couldn't beat for cutting down on food waste and there were some really faddy meals in there.
I lost my original copy for years but finally managed to find one online and then found another a week later in a charity shop. I bought both copies in case I ever lost it again!0 -

It's okay now I have both editions but when I had lost my original 1971 version and bought the 2003 edition (supposedly as a replacement) I was gutted to find lots of my favourite bits missing.
The two work well alongside each other but I would happily murder anyone who tried to take my 1971 edition0 -
thriftlady wrote: »Yes the rabbit recipes have gone -why?
Could it be that the rabbit recipes have been removed because rabbit is dearer than it was in the 70s? I've never cooked it myself, but my Mum used to buy it for our very faddy Siamese cat so I suppose it must have been fairly cheap at that time. Whereas I saw "Half a large rabbit" in our butcher's the other day and it was £8.99. We live on the edge of London, but even so I felt it was rather dear and not "frugal"!0 -
