That is disgracefull and probably illegal. Sack people for being sick, then pressure others to work through sickness.

Not illegal at all. Companies are being advised to go away from the usual criteria of last in first out because that can be deemed to be 'ageist' against young people. Absence is measured using the Bradford Score which is a score accumulated by number of absences and a multiple of working days lost. You obviously don't manage a large workforce and experience high levels of sickness that creates increased levels of pressure to those with a good work ethic. They are the ones that deserve to keep their jobs. I'm sure it's no coincidence that the to$$ers all seem to have the highest Bradford Score.
  • Have to hope they let numpties go, how else will I get my pay off...

I worked for a large, blue chip company. Just unfortunate they had to lay off a lot of people and as my department got reduced, I got caught up. Doesn't mean to say that I was "dead wood". Worked for the same manager for 12 years.

I know about the Bradford Score, I dealt with it for a few years and rarely had time of sick (in my 12 years, about 15 days in total), but people had to go and there was nothing suitable to offer me. So it's not always numpties that they get rid of...if jobs need to go...

My previous company seemed to promote all numpties to management positions.

People are promoted to their level of incompetence.

Did we used to work together? I think I was there too.... One of my previous employers seemed to exercise great skill in promoting using the Peter/Septic Tank principles.

It can be very revealing to flag the employees who are only sick on Mondays.

  • if anything, they're doing the opposite. the civil service dept i used to work for has just put a redundancy* offer to all the decent, professionally qualified people. the dullard ranks below which are overpopulated by at least 200% are excluded from this.

Surely that's becasue getting rid of the intelligent people who stand a good chance of employment else where keeps the numptity who private employers would touch with a bargepole off the dole list figures?

    * or "MAVIS" as they now call it, whatever the fook that means (and i wonder how much they paid to consultants to come up with that acronym)

Yeah - plus when voluntary redundancy is offered it's inevitably the smartest, most motivated people who are likely to take it as they can go get another job and pocket the cash.

The deadwood will cling on to their positions at all cost because they know they can't cut it anywhere else.

Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.
