Companies using the Crunch to get rid of numpties?

If people are in companies where there's been layoffs, are these the 'dead wood' that no-one is very sorry to see go?

Fair enough some companies have a hopeless business model and/or their financing is all over the place and will go phut.

But I reckon that while the unions can't complain etc., many plc are using the crunch as an excuse to chuck out those who aren't pulling their weight.

It's a theory. Pity it doesn't extend to the government.

if anything, they're doing the opposite. the civil service dept i used to work for has just put a redundancy* offer to all the decent, professionally qualified people. the dullard ranks below which are overpopulated by at least 200% are excluded from this.

    * or "MAVIS" as they now call it, whatever the fook that means (and i wonder how much they paid to consultants to come up with that acronym)

The scoring can be down almost any way companies want, so I guess some will set scoring systems so that some undesrables conveniently come out bottom. However the same system needs to be used for everyone so anywhere with a glut of redundancies will no doubt also lose others they werent so keen to see go.

Yes. I must point out I meant the 'government' - Brown and co. It was not a dig at the Civil service, public sector workers, etc.

I think we should have a parlimentary cull! Be funny seeing a lot of puffed out MP's running down whitehall - first to the finishing post keep's their job!

Exactly the case in my workplace. The current criteria is absence record and then they are offering 'compromise agreements' to enhance the statutory redundancy payment to save all the hassle of putting everybodys jobs at risk. It certainly sends out a powerful message. Other criteria considered was disciplinary record.

That is disgracefull and probably illegal. Sack people for being sick, then pressure others to work through sickness.
