Job hunting so hard right now!

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to start a thread to say how hard it is to find a job right now and to let those in a similar situation know that they are not alone.
I have been redundant since Nov 2008, and since then I must have applied for about 100 jobs, and had about 8 interviews.
Nothing is coming through for me.
I had something I was sure I would get and today I got a call saying "I thought you were wonderful and exactly what I was looking for, but my partner thought that the lady who came in last week had a bit more experience than you and would therefore take less time to train". Great. It wasn't even a job that I wanted, long hours, less money, but I needed it none the less.
It's so hard to know where to turn right now.
Yesterday I met with a photographer, the first step in me opening my own business offering admin and secretarial support from home, and the meeting went amazingly well. But whilst it is my first client, and a very good one at that, it's not a full time wage and will be comission only.
I just get fed up with applying because I feel that everyone will knock me back! So so hard for all us jobseekers right now - less jobs, more amazing candidiates!
Good luck to you all!

Stay positive though, you have had 8 interviews which means you are in the running and it's only a matter of time.Torgwen..........

Hi
I understand how you feel. I got made redundant in August. I'm now temping which is keeping the money coming in and I'm lucky enough to have been temping in the same job for the same company for a few months now and they've made noises that I'm going to be there for few months yet. It really suits me as I'm on a good hourly rate for admin/secretarial. It's not what I want to do long term but it's keeping me going and I'll stay there until I'm told otherwise.
I was worried after my redundancy. I'm in my 40's so thought no-one would want me at my age, had been out of the job market for a number of years and had most of my experience in Financial Services.
The agency I registered with had loads of admin temp roles - perhaps you could do that for a while?Debt 30k in 2008.:o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free
Mortgage free since 2014

getting 8 interviews is amazing as it is! you must have had some talent that the firms were are interested in..
did you get any feddback, to say what may have let you down each time? a slight tweak (appearance, confience etc?) could make all the difference!
you have not been charged for this opinion- it is free, and worth every pennY!Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0 -
I graduated 19 months ago and have had 13 months unemployment in total. It's an absolute nightmare. Apparently there are nearly 2m unemployed at the mo, and we average about 50 applicants per job!
Flexibility and tenacity are the keys, don't give up!0 -
Thank you all!
Yes I have had feedback that it just came down to the other candidates having more experience. And re temping - I'm applying for that too - I'm also in admin / secretarial.
I'll even take part time but nothing's coming off right now  Just gotta keep plugging away I guess!0 -
I've been out of work since last July and can sympathise. I've had numerous no-replys and a few interviews with no success. The reason always seems to be someone else with more experience. The most gauling thing for me is when I come accross incompetent fools going about their jobs and I'm left thinking 'how the hell did that idiot manage to get into that job'. This happens all the time from shop assistants to customer service personnel to local authority workers, etc, you name it! Although I probably just notice this more now because I don't happen to have a job at the moment. Good luck anyway.0

I really hope you're successful in your job hunt. I have just started to look for my first job and I'm really worried as there is so little around and I have no experience.0

... no success. The reason always seems to be someone else with more experience.
I've been out of work since October. I had feedback this morning following a contracting interview a few weeks ago telling me that the recruiters (also contractors) thought I was over-experienced and a potential threat to them! I thought experience was considered competence and value. I didn't question the money (poor that it was) and gave the most positive and supportive signals I possibly could. They were so enthusiastic about me and how my experience would help their cause no end as every box, and many more, were ticked! But in the cold light of decisions I guess they came back with a reason I just can't grasp.
Job hunting is so hard right now and the other 120+ wasted applications (over 90% without reply) is testament to the utter frustration and futility I feel just now.0 -
Gosh guys you really have my sympathy! I too have been told to the take 'management experience' out of my CV as this will put off people wanting to employ me as I look over-experienced!! When I was job hunting 2 years ago, I was being offered everything I went for!0

As others have said, 8 interviews is very good! But it's quite a lot to have had in such a short space of time, with no positive results. I can't help thinking that there may be something holding you back in interview.
Have you had any feedback apart from that one call you mentioned? Negative or positive?0
