So they won't be too concerned about their British inhabitants?

And to answer my own question - Why should they be. Look how we berate our own immigrants.
  • My father in law (Spanish) does building work for a sizeable chunk of the ex-pat community in and around Alicante. They sit in beachside bars ordering beer in English reading locally printed copies of the Daily Mail, and they tut and muttter about the scum immigrants who come to Britain, make no effort to integrate and don't speak the language. It has to be seen to be believed.

So no, most Spanish don't care about immigrants. They are blamed quite a lot for the artificial bubble which has now imploded.

I would have thought that the Brits would have injected real cash into the economy e.g. pensions, Sterling house purchases without taking Spanish jobs. I can believe the attitude though

Probably they do... but with all the strains on Spain's economy, you're bound to get more and more people coming to accept irrational and delusional arguments to scapegoat innocents - such as how the ex-pats are a drain on Spain's healthcare system (don't know if that is true or not actually) - or any other number of other ways to blame them for Spain's property boom to bust. I hope it doesn't turn nasty for those ex pats living over there.

We are constantly being told how this is a Global recession/crunch so why is discussing other countries going into recession not relevant?

Although I have now seen the light; having experienced my own anecdotal light bulb moment, today on the high street (ignoring the shut Zavvi, Adams, Woolworths, Rosebys, and Stead & Simpson) outside two Estate agents were no less than FOUR people checking the window details.

So, that's it. Crunch over, job losses to be reversed, green shoots at waist height, house prices will have gone up 5% this month I'm sure.

I feel so much better that my funds tied up for the next 5 months are not going to be able to buy a house until 20% HPI has put us back at peak prices...

    Perhaps you could apply some consistency to your ridicule of "negative" posts, i.e. ISTL doesn't get the "treatment" on his posts;

Unless of course you are just as much a hypocrite and starter of personal attacks as you accuse other posters of being?

Definitely not - we have a bit of a way to travel on this journey

you're being too clever here and maybe an indication of were you're agenda is - great economic strategy

You're bang on the money - ISTL posts with very much balance both negative and positive press which is obviously due to the "negative-tinted" spectacles you're wearing that show the hypocryte that you MAY be.

To add ISTL also does not joyously accept negative news and ONLY post negative information.

  • Nice edit...subtle.

One persons bad news is another person's good news, in some cases.

ONLY negative is unfair - I may LEAN towards the negative, but I would argue (and if I could be bothered prove) that I have posted USEFUL stuff too.

Just thought of an example; When people argued over MEW, I posted the BoE graphs/figures, so they could debate with the facts, instead of "I think its high/low/whatever"...

but I guess that sort of thing escaped your attention.

A hypocrite about what? I used the word after seeing you berate another poster for personal attacks, hours earlier, then go off topic on this thread and make it about me rather than the subject.

How about just giving your opinion on the subject of the thread? If its not of interest, fine, there are plenty of other threads.

    Ok and understand you're thinking.

Yes you're right, I missed it.

I said MAY and will take that back as I now understand where you are going. It was in no way a personal attack but comments on your posting style.

I worked in Spain for two years and still have business dealings there - the above posts amused me because it was all focused around Brits abroad. Spain has much more to it than that.

Unemployment benefit has been moved to paid 3 months in arrears now I believe. If i was cynical I would have said this due to the fact that they don't have enough cash to pay.

the boom in Spain was due to construction but they have a bigger immigrant problem than the UK, due to their proximity to Africa and links to South America. There are many Eastern Europeans too; mainly Bulgarians and Rumanians which coincidently are accused of much crime.

the Spanish population are used to these ups and downs; they had problems in the mid 90s when Aznar took over. he implemented many changes which pushed the economy on.

as for the current Government i believe their hands may be much more tied due to their link to the Euro and may not have the option of the economic strategies or changes that the UK or the US can implement.

the population will probably ride out their own recession and get on with it as their is much more of a family concept even if it may have been diluted in the last 20 years.

the regional issues; basques and catalans will also arise as it will be a perfect opportunity to highlight their wealth and contribution to the economy.

i hope that you now see my point about posting for the sake of posting bad news when it has no impact in your life.
