I heard that if i buy a card that is too powerful it will blow up my motherboard? Is this a myth?

Ok here is what i need to know in detail.

1.How can i determine my power supply unit?
2.How much power does the geforce 9500 need?
3.If my computer meets requirements of No.2 should i buy the geforce?
4.If i shouldnt buy the geforce what card should i buy that would be more suitable?

If someone can answer these four questions, i would be ever so grateful and finally crystal clear on this graphic card fiasco.

    1) open up your pc - look on the side of the power unit.. it should tell you.
    2) it requires atleast 400 watts
    3) YES
    4) n/a

Lol, this is ridiculous. 300w is it max . So i guess i need to buy a new power supply unit. Destiny is forcing my hand now, so i guess i might as well now go for the full thing and build myself a new pc.

Can someone recommend me a compatible power supply unit, mothereboard and graphic card that all work in harmony together. I'll i work out pricing later.

    Thx you.

Anyway, most modern games require 2+GHz dual core at leat. What you've got is a 3GHz single core, much slower.

    hold on!! lol.

PSU = £20 ish quid... ClicK Me Please!

You could always try that.... then take it from there!

Although it would be best to buy new components. prob looking around £150 - £200 for everything though.

Wouldn't trust that PSU with a shiny new GFX and potentially mobo and CPU. If you want somthing good, look at the Corsair and Coolermaster ones. Expensive, but worth every penny.

  • Don't go for the cheapest PSU you can find. It's a false economy. Get a decent one and expect to pay around £60 for it. What game are you trying to play that needs shader 3 ?

I only posted them as the op was concerned about cost. obviously - they are better ones... but for what the op wants it for... something similar should be enough.

No need for corsair / coolermaster ones unless your an avid extreme gamer (in my opinion.... )

Granted that ones £20... spend around £40 for a 'half decent one'.

What power supply pins do i need? Im not going to go for a cheap one, ive read buying a cheap one could take out your harddrive with it so there no point in that.

Also, the Corsair ones have very low noise levels, huge fans which help with case air flow and very low power consumption. Plus, they last a good deal longer than a cheapo one, and the cost of a PSU failure can be very high. I had a cheap one go a while ago, mobo toast, HDD destroyed!

Depends - What motherboard do you have?
Or... what motherboard are you upgrading to?
