Have you tried supermarket own 'cooking bacon'? It is £1.56 for 500g at Mr T and even better value is Mr S is £1.56 for 670g - you need to look carefully at the contents to ensure that the pieces are not too fatty but you get all different types (back, streaky) and both smoked and unsmoked. Most of the packs I have bought have tasted yummy! Other supermarkets will probably have similar - but these two are the ones nearest to me.
Yes i do use this for cooking pasta sauces and other bits and bobs but I was after back bacon for breakfast rolls and sometimes there just isnt enough rasher type bits in the misshapes. No Mr S,Mr A or Mr M near me unfortunately.

    Afternoon everyone :hello:

Having a pretty frugal day today not going anywhere to spend anything. Spent the last couple of hours sorting through my spending for last month - what an experience. Found I spend far more than I thought on things that aren't food
Due to this I have gone through my whole financial situation and found how much I have each month that I can spend. This totals £520 and has to cover food, toiletries, animals, petrol/parking, kids for school/college, socialising and anything else that comes up! I also have an amount I'm putting away for Birthdays, Christmas and our holiday so anything I can cut from my household budget will go in to savings. Wish me luck!

Spent £16.03 at Jack Fultons yesterday

Just done my last January shop and have declared my total over on the January thread. (Although I get paid on the 24th and OH gets paid on the 28th, I'm working calendar months as it's easier to get my tiny brain around it that way!)

I've done an inventory of the freezers and store cupboards and worked out a mealplan for February. I'm picking my organic meat box up on Thursday, so I've gone through the list of what should be in it and worked most of the contents into the plan.

Quick question - what kind of gammon joint would be best for making ham to slice for sandwiches? The organic butcher has about 6 different types on their website - I always thought gammon was just gammon? After hearing about the Jamie Oliver programme on pig farming the other night, I'm thinking it's a bit hypocritical for me to be making an effort to buy happy chickens and other organic meat, and then buying ham for OH's sandwiches which almost certainly comes from abused pigs. So I want to make my own ham, which I can slice and freeze in portions.

Can I go for £250 in February, please Mrs M?

I can't answer your gammon question, but I just wanted to say that I love that you called them 'happy' chickens. I use that term all the time and people always give me dodgy looks! Also, good idea about making your own ham, I missed that program, only caught the chicken one and cheap food one so will think about doing the same rather then buying ham. Let me know how you get on and what gammon you suggest!

Technically spent in Jan, but it's food from Febs budget, £4.26 spent on 3 large peppers, a massive bag of tomatos, way too many bananas (thinking of making banana bread now as well as carrot cake just to use these up!) two large lemons and carrots. I bought them from the market and I feel it was well worth the trip, the quality is just lovely compared to shop bought, the bananas for £1 are easily half the price I buy from Mr S. I guess I saved £1-£2 but also got better quality.

Annnd, my graze thing had a portion of fresh pinapple and two dried fruit portions which look yummy. Eating the pinapple before it goes off and saving the dried fruit for yummy snacks. Yay free food!

  • Hi all,

Sorry bit late posting total for January, so thought I should put it on here so you can see my totals Mrs M...

Total for January is £259.53, just over by £19.53, but we had nothing in, so not too bad.

Same again for this month please - Budget for February is £240 (£60 a week) It is helping that I draw the money out now and keep it in my change purse - I can see what I'm spending - especially on extras... it hurts to take out the cash...

Not posting too much really, but still love the challenge, the recipes and the gossip when I get chance to catch up, so keep it up people, you're doing great...:T
