Harrassing letters from Bulldog Pipex - help!

My elderly mum who is in her 70s got a threatening letter from Bulldog Pipex saying that she owes them over £100 for their services. She cancelled her subscription to them in November and switched to Virgin. She wrote them a letter at the time (which she does not have a copy of unfortunately) but they responded seemingly to confirm that they had received her final payment for the account. She also has a letter from Virgin confirming the switchover date was 7th November 2008. Obviously she cancelled her direct debit to Bulldog at that time.

She has tried to contact the person named on the letter but apparently he is only available by email (which go unanswered). Everytime she tries to call them she is either left waiting for ages or goes through to someone who cannot help and passes her on endlessly to people who cannot help.

The letter threatens her with problems with her credit rating and I am worried that they will send some balliffs around. She lives on her own and I don't want them harrassing her. What can she/we do to get them to acknowledge that she does not owe them for the months they claim and that she has left them, seeing as their customer services are non existant and her emails/letters go unrecognised?

    I'm not sure. I don't think she had a longterm contract with Bulldog but really not sure.
  • very few companies offer short-term contracts, if she recently, maybe 6 months earlier, renewed her contract, taking a cheaper deal or getting a free modem, then she would be liable for the remainder :(
