Migration Problems

I don't know whether anyone has experience with the following:
I left Orange at the end of December to run with BT. I gave the MAC code to BT at that time. I didn't formally cancel with Orange as they said it would all be taken care of as BT & Orange would liaise.
Began BT on 7th January - no problems.
Orange carry a 30-day cancellation period which, I assumed, would start as soon as BT made contact with them - I guess sometime before 7th Jan. However, Orange claim that this can't start until 13th Jan - six days after they stopped supplying me.
So, the effective cancellation period is six weeks.
Is there anything I can do? Is this normal?
As a matter of principle I want to challenge this.
