Disability stopping me from working

Hi
Bit of background for you! Had previously always worked until I had my daughter 5 yrs ago, stayed at home with her and now I am wanting to go back to work. Problem is, during my time at home I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and even daily tasks are a problem. I worked for a total of 2 days last month and couldnt cope with the job, typing caused my finger joints to swell so I know admin jobs are out of the question.
Is there any benefits that I could claim? My dh is on highter rate of DLA but works full time, i'm not sure what I would qualify for.
Your help is much appreciated

Hello SuperSaverSue,
This thread may get moved to the Disability and Dosh thread, as you may get more help there.
I think you could claim DLA, and it would be about the care you need due to your condition.
You will have nothing to loose by applying, and as your other half is in receipt, you should be familiar with the forms.
I suggest you make an appointment to seek advice as to which other benefits you can claim.
Dial is a great service to use, and they are often staffed by disabled persons, and are more specialised with disability issues.

This will help you find your nearest branch.
The is also Welfare Rights, normally part of your county council.
Also the CAB. You can make an appointment in advance, to save on the waiting time.
Good luck,

Why do you keep posting remarks like this? The Benefits Board is the correct place for benefits advice!

Hi there.
I too have multiple joint RH, and pernicious aenamia and osteoporosis.
I am lucky that i am able to work full time and have done since about 4 months after i was diagnosed over 20 years ago. I was on medication for my RH for many years, luckily after trying quite a few we found one that worked along with
gold injections, they stopped helping about 10 years ago and we found something else to replace it and that helped. after about 5 years on those tablets the specialist cut me down gradually and i was taking just one a day and i kept forgetting to take them I then tried without them and have not to this day had another tablet. I do get flare ups now and again but cope with them. Just giving you a bit of hope that this need not necessarily be a life long RH, you can go into remission and lead a normal life. I know how painful and debilitating it can be.
Excercise but pace yourself and dont do too much all at once.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

Maybe you don't even realise it but that's how it comes over.0 -
There must be a huge cross over between Disability & Dosh and the Employment, Jobseeking & Training and the Benefits & Tax Credits areas on the board.
I find it totally confusing and don't understand why they are not grouped together. If it was just Disability it would make more sense, but the 'Dosh' makes it confusing for new people imho.Numpties...I'm surrounded by them...save me...:whistle:0 -
My husband has RH/A also and he had to stop work. He did take some of the drugs all with major side affects and some were far worse than the r/a for him. He gets high rate dla to get around and he also gets middle rate care as he has trouble dressing, washing etc.0

When talking about disability and benefits, the 2 boards do cross over.
People that respond to these type of questions, do so on both boards, but often posters do not realise, that there is a second board, where they can also get disability related advice.

Disability & Dosh refers really to the grants that are available for people and the various charities and help groups that they can turn to for advice and where to purchase aids that may be needed. We also give advice on how to save money...again this is from grants etc as already mentioned.
The OP has posted on the correct board because this is where we advice on benefits. As others have suggested she should apply for DLA and perhaps arrange for Access to Work to visit the work place and make recommendations so that her employer can make reasonable adjustment to accommodate the disability (I am assuming that the OP is female, apologies if not). Access to Work can even provide some funding towards the adjustments.

Yes I have seen this a few times, it is wrong to make these remarks as most people with benefits knowledge post here and I have also noticed very few people view the other board.0 -
I think that some of the regular, knowledgable benefit help posters are being discouraged by other posters constantly sniping at them.0
